I had a great time, and walked away with like 10 of those folders because the store had extras. Hey, I'm a sticker-loving gal, so sue me, lol. I also got to trade for the one card I was missing from my collection. Turns out I never had Rimuel, go figure since the card bites, and I got it to complete Shadowclash. I then traded away the extra foils I had, often cheating myself like a Gatling for non-foil Metalwing, because it's hard for younger players to get the cards they want and I have extras anyway.
I went to a new store closer to my new home. The tourney got around 9 players, a few came too late so they didn't get to duel. When I got to the store, all the kids had brought out the store's entire DM stock! I got there a bit late, so I was only able to buy a Shobu Fire deck for my neighbor. I went to this new store to have fun and see if my area was picking up players. Normally I have to go to a different state, about 3 hours of driving, to play in sanctioned events. In the spirit of the day and considering the age of the majority of players, I set out to do very low-intensity dueling and teaching games.
Like most young players they played Fire and Darkness, but several sported nice Survivor decks. Many liked the Survivors and all of them had Speed Attackers. I think the champ of the younger group played Survivors. One kid who sat down to play a non-tourney match with me promptly told me that he was undefeated. He played a good game considering that his deck lacked kill and solid Rush creatures. One habit with some younger players is that they only attack players and don't attack creatures. So I played my Control decks to show him another way you can go about playing the game. I also told him to check out Realms for Ryoma's and videokyd's Rush decks so he could get some ideas and increase his deck's kill options, as he was running just Arrows and Burning Power.
So, it was basically a bunch of teaching games for me, and the younger duelists were better players than the younger duelists at my regular store, tho they still are playing attack-happy and largely ignoring the creatures their opponents put out. So, I'm going to come there for League to play more teaching games and still do the tournies at my regular store until this store's older crowd picks up more than 4 players.
O mine was sweet i havent have a tourement since Oct,2,04 so i was hipe we had a non-sanctioned tourment and i got 3th and 3 olgatesI had a Ballus promo that i wasnt sopost to get if i didnt win 1-2 place but they didnt know everygot one olgate I traded my ballus for one and the manger gave me one for free.i have acouple of folder the models are kool we got around 10 players so i had a great day!!!
Mine sucked. I was set up to demo the game to those that might be coming in to figure out what to do with the cards they got in their Happy Meals - but no one came. I demoed the came to the store owner and his primary sales clerk.
And no one came in for the binders and no one came in to trade. The store said they got calls all week (and there were 2 calls today) with people calling to find out what other freebies were being given out. Some thought that free McDonalds cards would be handed out - others thought the Nature Beast Folk card in the InQuest would be given out.
Also, some store in the area handed out their notebooks early, because this store also had walk-ins on Wednesday with a folder in their hand wondering what promos would be handed out on 3/5.
Not sure where the disconnect occurred - but my area's players / collectors / mooches were looking for free cards and thought the folder was lame.
I couldn't even get the 14 RPGA guys of the 8 Magic Arena League guys to take the demo -- very disappointing.
I ended up with 7 folders (the store will probably hand out the rest at the next release event in April).
I think many more would have come if there was a new promo card or alt art promo. Every tourney participant got the JDC promo Gigakail. The winners got Nocturnal Giant too. A special trade day Natural Snare or Lancer with the March date stamped on it like the Urcan one would have been sweet.
I was pretty happy with our turn out. Sure it wasn't much, but after months of not even seeing the cards it was a nice change of pace.
I was recruited by our local store owner to run the event. He was going to be out of town, and when it first came out I was really big into to it. But, I haven’t played a game since Evo-Crushinators of Doom came out and only have bought about six packs of Rampage of the Super Warriors. And I haven't even thought about Duel Masters since. So I went to the WotC website to refresh myself with the rules and built two decks.
Now at the store nobody has played far a while so we were going to just do a trade day (no tournament), just to try to get a feel for how many players we actually had. But, I did bring an extra deck just incase I needed to do a demo. And all my cards, I was hoping to trade some of my Duel Masters cards to other players for their Yu-Gi-Oh! cards. Unfortunately nobody brought any trade fodder, like me everyone else didn't think anyone else would show up. But, including me we had six people. Four of us who actually came for the event, and a couple kids who where there for something else and noticed the Duel Masters and got there decks out. I gave out the promo card and a folder to anyone who played a game. I thought the folder was a bit cheesy, but I am an older player. I did think the folder was a cute idea for the younger players though.
Most of the players were kids that had played before, but just let the game fizzle out. The youngest player we had, just traded all of his Yu-Gi-Oh! for Duel Masters. He didn't have a deck or a game under his belt. His mom came and picked him up and I told him that next week we are going to run a tournament and I would be there early. So if he needed help building a deck I would be more than happy to help. I also directed his mom to the WotC web site to do the online demo to learn how to play.
As for what happened during the time I was there I had quite a bit of interest in my cards, but no real offers. I think I'll get more next week. I played five games, and remembered how much fun the game was (so I'm not sure I'll be giving up cards for Yu-Gi-Oh! for the time being), won four. I was thrilled to see my decks worked, after not playing for such a long time.
So I think that it was a good day. It sounds like most of the six will be back next week for the tournament. And I had a good time, and that's all that really counts.
Wow cecillbill, your day was a lot like mine... its eerie. I went to the first store closest to me, they had calls all week and 2 that day, but noone showed but me.
So I went to their sister store and there were two young freshies that I traded Rimuel to and took a few hits on trades to help them out and get me some extra copies of some cards i was short on.
We played a few matches (they played fire/dark of course). They went solely for sheilds and i gave them some help learning the game better (deck building, creature kill, etc...).
All in all not bad, wish there enough folks for a tourny.
Our's was actually quite nice. I went in went the store opened and did the Beat the Experts event for about 4 hours. Then we had a tournement that had I believe 15-20 people. It could have been better, but it still could have been much worse as well, and it was still a good day.
i wish i coulda gone to trade day at the store near me, but i had a party i had to go to. although the party was fun i wish i coulda gone to trade day, it sounded like it was so much fun.
BC - if there was a store near you holding it -- there is BOUND to be extra folders. Just ask when you are there next (as long as it isn't a month from now).
