This came up in a strategy discussion and I'm looking for some clarification.
The UDE FAQ has stated that: Activating the card causes a replay.
However, a Judges FAQ entry, dated during the same month that the revised info about replays was posted on the Yugi FAQ site goes as follows:
QUESTION:
Hello,
If I activate a staunch defender on the declaration of attack by the
opposing player, can he choose a different face up monster to attack the
monster of my choice, or does the one he attacked with have to be the first?
============================================================================
ANSWER:
No replay is being triggered here. The number of potential attack targets on
the opponent's side of the field is not changing. The monster that was attacking when "Staunch Defender" was activate must attack the target of "Staunch Defender".

So are these two rulings going against each other, or is there a contextual issue that I'm missing between the two rulings that I need clarified.
The new Replay mechanics I would follow and not that ruling under Staunch Defender. Kevin is correct. I do believe you know that when other pieces of mechanics get changed (in this case Replay mechanics) that it may or may not cause specific card rulings or even other game mechanics to be wrong.
Yeah...since this is most likely the most recent ruling, I'd be following this one...though a replay does, sort of, make sense anyways in a generalized point-of-view, but I'd still go with this one overall.
It doesnt cause a Replay, and that isnt what they meant by "Causes a replay".
What it means is, whatever monster that was being attacked prior to Staunch Defender being activated will not be attacked (unless it was the original target) and the monster selected for Staunch Defender's effect will be the new attack target for all face-up attack monsters on the Turn Players side of the field.
That is only a replay as far as saying that the monster must attack a new target based upon an effect, and the attacking player CANNOT choose a different target (or a new monsters to attack with) unless the selected monster is destroyed by attack.
If i understand the rulings on staunch defender correctly, if the monster that is the target for SD is destroyed, you can not select a different target to attack but are instead left unable to attack any other monster that turn.
