A double game loss shall be treated as a double game win as well.
You'll see a further explination of this from UDE later but I wanted to make you aware of it. We've been discussing this on the L3 list and the judge manager has made it official.
The problem with a double game loss not also becoming a double game win is that it never helps the match toward forward progress. Now, granted, a double game loss / win may at times not further the match either ( two people tied at 1 game win a piece aided by a double game loss / win makes both players 2-1....I'll assume for the time being that doesn't equate to a double match win as well and that another game must be played) but it does help to make forward progress on a match where one player is ahead 1-0 in games.
Expect to see this in future versions of tournament policy.

If both players are tied and end up with a DGL - DGW, it should work out to be the same as a end of time Draw, with the exception that as long as there is still time, both players would attempt to play a full game until a winner is decided, and I dont see any reason why the game should be recoded as a "Double Win" in Mantis. It would probably be easier to record it as a Draw, since both players technically did draw the game, as neither got an advantage/disadvantage by the win/loss.
So what would qualify players to get a Double Game Win?
Something like this might qualify as a scenario that you're looking for.
Treeborn was killed by Dark Ruler Ha Des and negated. During the turn of the player that owns Treeborn Frog Special Summons it in defense. Neither player catches the game play error. That player then proceeds to tribute it off for Zaborg the Thunder Monarch. The opponent calls over a judge after realising that Treeborn Frog shouldn't have been on the field.
I think that would classify as one.
Another one could be if a player uses Soul Exchange and brings out Thestalos and attacks but neither player catches the game player error and the opponent catches it after the game state has prgressed past a repairable point -- such as the opponent starting his turn.
I think that would be a double game loss/win as well.
neither of those situations would call for a DGL
In the first situation you give the turn player a warning and then rewind the game and put the frog back in the grave, assuming that nothing else has happened. That game state is not irreparable.
In the second situation the game state is repairable as well, the thestalos remains on the field and the lifepoints are given back to the defending player, or in the place of a monster being destroyed, it is returned to the field.
Well, it's going to be very handy to know what these scenarios look like so I'm not standing there in front of the two players wondering what to do before I go ask another judge that I'm working with. I can't really think of anything that would be classified as one right now. =/
Wait, doesn't this mean a player could win game 1, then cheat to force a double game win/loss, taking the match 2-1? That would be a terrible ruling. We don't need more rules that help cheaters...coughfinalcutcough
Rarely should a double game loss be issued. If it is it should be in a case where double but unrelated events cause it (for instance deck check and both players have 16 card side decks)
Whenever humanly possible a double game loss should be avoided and whenever possible it the solution or ruling should not impeed upon progress of the match.
I agree with mortals in that discussing scenarios of this type is best done in private for those who are serious judges and it's important to them to know and understand. Cheating sours our game more and more so, lets not give anyone bile to vomit on us shall we?
If the game has not progressed far enough from that point, then you can 'rewind' the game state to the point where the mandatory effect would have activated/resolved and you can continue from there giving both players a warning.
Too many judges decide that the only thing to do at points like these are to give both players a game loss and restart the game. I personally try to exhause all other possible solutions before I even consider that (due to time constraints and trying to make the match progress).
I had a situation before where I missed a mandatory trigger due to too many things happening on the chain and was just forgotten until the end of the turn...such as I have a Sangan on the field and it attacks Cyber Jar. Then Cyber Jar resolves and that's where it get's weird. I forgot Sangan's effect since we had to do all of Cyber Jar's effects and it's still the battle phase and one of the monsters that was put to the field was Breaker and one was Apprentice Magician which means we had to try and figure out if Breaker got a Token and one of the opponent's monsters was Tsukuyomi and he didn't know it just went to his hand. Lots of weird cards and questions so I just forgot Sangan's effect until I ended the turn. My opponent Drew and I remembered Sangan. He hadn't done anything but Draw. I try to resolve Sangan and he says I can't so I call a judge over and I get a warning, but we have to back track to fix it....which did nothing but have me go to my deck and get a monster. My opponent was just a rule shark and wanted to win by a technicality. That kind of thing shouldn't happen unless you really can't undo the problem.
