Based on the title I assume most of you know what my ruling question is about; however, I'll state it anyways. If your opponent destroys your giant rat in battle, can you therefore select Green Gadget from your deck to special summon and gain the gadgets ability to fetch another gadget?

I know that certain card effects cannot be used during the dmg step etc. however I found this case rather misleading. Can anyone clarify this for me please?

The timing is missed since it's an optional effect.

Funny, I always thought you can get a Gadget's effect when it's Special Summoned by Giant Rat's effect. Even if it is an optional effect, the last thing to happen in this case is the Gadget being Special Summoned.

Alright, so it appears that it does work, thats pretty interesting. Why dont I see lilys, rats and exileds in these gadet decks then?

Joker is correct. Although the Gadgets are optional effects, their effects are the last to resolve in a chain involving Giant Rat. You can get your Gadget.

I don't think he meant their effects. I think he meant that the gadget's summon was the last thing to happen in a chain involving giant rat. mentioning "the last thing to happen" implies that he meant that it wouldn't miss its timing.

Again that is correct :P

Remember, optional effects can only be triggered if and only if they are the last part of the chain.
