A couple questions that are related. When SORL is played, and I have a flip effect monster on the field face down, does the flip effect happen when SORL is activated, or is he just shown but not actually summoned. If he is not actually flip summoned, but is only revealed, then can I flip summon him to attack position during my turn and get the activation of his flip effect?

What happens if he is attacked by my opponent the turn SORL is played. Does his flip effect trigger then as it would if he was in face down defence mode?

Yes, a Monster's Flip Effect is activated when SoRL is played. Flip Effects happen whenever the Monster is flipped face-up by battle or by being Flip Summoned. That's it. *Waits*

You're missing another, important, way of activating a flip-effect.

Whenever a monster is flipped face up by any means, if they have a flip effect they will activate unless the card that flips them face up specifically states that flip effects do not activate (think of Ceasefire).

So that means that something like Swords of Revealing Light, Book of Taiyou, or Desert Sunlight will activate flip effects and the monster is not considered to have been flip summoned in anyway.
