Okay, this may sound like a very foolish question, but please be patient with me. Alright so last weekend I was at the card store dueling and some guy says, "You can't summon a monster in face up defense". I looked it up and he is actually correct. Is there a new ruling on that or something, how come NOBODY plays that way?
Also, can I set a monster face down in defense and then Flip summon him in the same turn?
I'm so very puzzled by this and if someone could just quickly clear it up for me, that would be amazing!
There has never been a change in ruling on summoning face-up defence. There has never been a ruling where you could do that. You also cannot flip a monster the same turn they are summoned. Every turn a monster gets a free position, meaning you can switch atk to def or vice versa every turn but the turn they are summoned. Once a monster is summoned, they cannot switch positions manually unless by a card effect.
There is a condition when you can summon in face-up defense... if it is a Special Summon and if the Special Summoning conditions do not specify a position then you can Special Summon the monster in either face-up attack or face-up defense. Per the rule book, v06, page 15 under "Special Summon".
