Is it possible for me to use card destruction to discard gravekeeper commander and get necrovalley on the field? I am thinking it's a no since commander's effect sounds like a cost...but i'll ask just to make sure.

You discard Gravekeeper's Commandant itself using it's own effect to search for Necrovalley.So you can't use Card Destruction.
