Here's the text for Goldd, which mirrors most of the DW texts (bold emphasis mine):
Goldd, Wu-Lord of Dark World Effect Monster
DARK / Fiend / 5 Stars
ATK: 2300 DEF: 1400
If this card is discarded from the hand to the Graveyard by a card effect, Special Summon it. If this card is discarded from the hand to the Graveyard by an opponent's card effect, you can select up to 2 cards your opponent controls and destroy them.
The two key features being a discard, which is different than send, and a card effect, which indicates that does not trigger when discarded by a cost.
Now this starts to get a smidge into card templating, but essentially you have four different aspects to your card text:
1. Flavor Text - this applies only to normal monsters
2. Summoning/Activation Conditions - This is indicates the required game state conditions in which the card can be activated, such as when your opponent declares an attack for Sakuretsu Armor or for you to control no monsters and your opponent to control a monster for Cyber Dragon.
3. Summoning/Activation Cost - This indicates what is required to activate a spell/trap card or to summon the monster to the field, such as discarding a card to activate Raigeki Break or removing 3 fiends from the graveyard for Dark Necrofear. This also applies to monster effects, such as discarding a card for Snipe Hunter's ability. Costs are paid immediately upon the activation of the effect.
4. Card Effect - This indicates what happens when the card resolves, such as Snipe Hunter doing the roll a die/destroying a card on the field or Sakuretsu Armor destroying the attacking monster.
So in the case above, the discard is being performed for the summoning cost, which is different than the card effect.
I know it gets tricky at times, but once you get a hold on the "templating" of a card, it helps a lot.
hmm I understand what you mean. But i've always thought "card effect" meant the effect on the card. so for Dark Grepher:
"You can discard 1 Level 5 or higher DARK monster to Special Summon this card from your hand. Once per turn, you can discard 1 DARK monster to send 1 DARK monster from your Deck to your Graveyard."
would be his card effect, so when you discard because of Dark Grephers effect it'd activate Goldd's summoning requirement.
i guess i was wrong..oh well.
does that also mean a dark world monster discarded for lightning vortex can't be special summoned from their effect? thats how i always thought it worked.
both of grepher's effects are costs. first cost is discarding a card to special summon him, the 2nd is a cost to discard to discard another card.
Prime examples of cards that are costs and won't trigger dw monsters
Raigeki Break
Lightning Vortex
Cards that aren't costs that will trigger the special summon
Cheerful Coffin
Card Destruction
Fine
DW Lightning
DW Dealings
Graceful Charity (like we'll EVER see this card again)
