it says it needs to be flipped then destroyed and sent to the graveyard does that mean if it gets attacked by an oppenents monster while face down it works like magician of faith? or do i have to set it then flip it myself?

Spear Cretin will still get its effect if attacked while face down. Cretin will be flipped face up during the damage calculation substep, then it's effect will activate once it is sent to the graveyard.
