I'm new on this board, but have been playing MW:DA for a while now & we just finished a season of Solaris (running light mechs) using the basic set of rules. We are about to begin a new season (running medium mechs this time) and was introduced to the advanced set of rules. Has anyone here played Solaris VII with the advanced rules? If so, is it fun, or is it jsut too much to have to keep up with. Another problem that I see that could develop is that the same guy won all of the games in the light mechs except for the very last one. If that happens again, I can see other players running out of stones & being forced out of the season. I would like to hear anyone's opinions about these advanced rules. Thanks
THe advanced set is great AS LONG as:
1. You have at LEAST 3 players
2. You can keep up with everything (TONS OF SHEETS...)
3. You plan to play for a while (LONG CAMPAIGN- like a few months!)
that about sums it up, otherwise, It is just like a standard game.
Thanks ag, last weekend was the first time that I had heard of advanced rules, and I couldn't find any rules for Solaris at all on the official (wizkids) site, so it took a google search to find the rules. I could see some of our players getting lost with all of the new rules. As for your reply, 1. You have at LEAST 3 players
We usually have between 4 & 8 players, and we play at a gaming store in a college town, so it shouldn't be a problem. 2. You can keep up with everything (TONS OF SHEETS...)
Judge is keeping up with sheets. 3. You plan to play for a while (LONG CAMPAIGN- like a few months!)
Light mechs season lasted for about 3 or 4 months.
So I guess we're good there, I'm just wondering if most of the other players will lose interest, because there are only about 3 of us who are hardcore gamers, the rest are just kids.
Well, to give you an idea, my gf enjoys the advanced Solaris rules much more than the MW:DA rules. She plays D&D, but finds that MW:DA is full of exceptions that she doesn't like keeping track of.
were you running the basic "one-off" games before, or the simple campaigning rules?
If you were just useing the "one-off" games, then try the campaining rules first.
Until resetly, the solaris rules were not offical, or even being done by wizkids. Here's the website with the most resent version of the rules before wizkids took it in house.
We were running the campaigning rules, I guess. I'm not familiar with the "one-off" games. Like I said, the season ran for about 4 months, accumulating XP & stones over the whole period of time, so I don't think it would classify as a "one-off" whatever that is.
Our judge told us that the guy that made the MW:DA rules for Solaris VII was fired (officially "released") for doing so, implying that he was an employee of wizkids when the rules were adopted.
Sounds like you BM has been running either his own version of solaris, or maybe the old rules. You said you were only playing light mechs. in the basic rules, you'd all eventually have too much fame to play the light leages. either way, you might want to take a look at the rules if you haven't.
The one-off games are 300 points for a mech and skills. each skill roll cost 15 points, and a ledgendary skill cost 45.
What we were doing was basically this:
Everyone starts out in a light mech. It uses the basic rules and certain (extremely few, like 2/season) games allow the winner to roll for a legendary ability. The season just ended 2 weeks ago & we are beginning a new season now in which, for the first few weeks at least, we will only run medium mechs. We are using the advanced rule set for this new season. After the first couple of weeks, we will again be allowed (at our descretion) to choose between light & medium mechs. After this season, we will graduate up to heavy, and then finally, assault. I'm not sure how defferent that was from the way everyone else is doing it, but everything else goes by the official rules. Basically, we're all graduating to larger mechs, but we had to start out in the light class first, & we're all moving up at the same time. Don't know if that's the way it's being done officially or whether he (BM) just wanted one less thing to keep track of.
I just realized, that I might be coming off has the rules police or something like that. Not inteded I assure you. If you're all enjoying playing that way then go for it. :)
If anything, I envy you. We barely ever get to play solaris around here, and the league comeing up will only last one night :(
