I was looking at my collection today and realized that I use a very small amount of it (around 20%). This is kind of sad, but understandable. I usually pass over so many mechs because just about all of them end up as chargebait. I think I might just say the heck with it and try to use a new mech every week. What about everyone else?
If I am playing a friendly game I try out different mechs all the time. If I am playing in an event then it's a whole other world. Mechs have been nothing but liabilities for me otherwise.
I also don't use very much of my collection unfortunately (62,914 points worth). But as far as which units get used it depends on what I am playing.
If I am playing in a sanctioned tournament, I unfortunately must take into account the current "meta-game" mentality that exists so I know that I will be facing Arnis Drummond and as much VTOL's and Arty that can be thrown at you for 300 or 400 points, so it limits the choices you have.
Regardless of the "meta-game" I just feel naked if I don't use at least one mech. So I build accordingly.
If it is for fun, or a venue-supported event, I like to bring out the Assault mechs and Arty and VTOL's be ####ed!!
As far as competitive tournament play- approx 5% of the collection gets used.
Fun/venue supported play- approx 50%-and up gets used (I like to try new and weird combinations of stuff to see what it can do).
Can't wait to see how the new rules may affect things, if they work out as posted it means I will get to use a lot more of my collection in competitive play!!
Let's see.. 4 expansions of about 150 figs (probably more than that).. that's 600 figs.
I use about 30, tops.
4%.
After the new rules?
Sadly it won't change. Since they're (trying) to make all 'Mechs better equally, it means that still, no 'Mech is worth using besides Arnis.

I disagree. The higher build totals and fewer commands will make big mechs playable. Arnis will need a 13 to hit a 23 defense. If Arnis charges a large mech with a zero minimum range weapon and a 23 defense he will lose 7 out of 10 times.
I personally looked at what i didn't use in my collection, and got rid of most of it.
I currently only have BR, SW, DF, mercs (& 2 republic units, Katsu and Paladin Jonah Levin) in my collection. this is how i am when i play, and i usually use most of the armies for the people. I have lots of different mechs for each faction, and can usually find some place to throw them in.
also, with the 450 build total, i have been trying out numerous different ideas. I have found that running 2 mechs is a good idea, and if one is a command mech, your set. I also decided to run OEJ and Katsu (450 exactly) in a game, and took down a Bart BR lego pure faction army. he had only a BR DI to deal with my armor, and his mechs mostly just died at my hands, along with his DI schmitt, after getting a single shot off.
If it isn't Wolf's Dragoon's it's in the trade box.
If it isn't the Ronin it's in the trade box.
I refuse to play ICE Mechs so they are all in the trade box.
Their are some units that are within the factions that I play that I will not use and they are in my trade box. HL Uller, DF Hauberk, etc.
That leaves me with a good sized collection of units that I use frequently. There is nothing in my Plano that I havent used in the past and won't use in the future. Well except maybe that Highlander Couger, I love the sculpt and am thinking about putting some green tiger stripes on him.
I only have a few select peices that are outside of those factions and I only use them as token peices in events that call for at least one peice of the faction I'm playing. SS hoverbikes, SC hoverbikes, SW CBA, etc.
I use my trade box to of course trade, give stuff to newer players so they can use formations and have peices they don't have like arty, transports, vtols, etc, or to give them to my friend's and their kids. What kid doesn't like taking two "robots" and smashing them into each other?
I view my collection as what I try and acquire for my armies. I view my trade box as stuff to get rid of. Which is why I don't hesistate to get the worse end of a trade or give it away. I'd rather have someone else use it instead of hoard it. Doesn't mean I'd give Mason away for a another string of Peasant Companies, but I hate hoarding stuff when it isn't doing me or anyone else any good sitting in a tupperware box.
other than that I don't use much else unless it is a storyline event or I feel like mixing it up and play Liao, SH, or SW(My "minor" factions I like to play).

Gee, when you put it that way, it all makes sense.
Except that for some reason, I'm playing with 100 points less than you are.
Well it is probably because Arnis is not going to charge that big bad boy until he is more like a little sappy boy as the 2AP artillery rains on his parade.
Caden is just 31 points more than Arnis. That leave me with plenty of points for Artillery. With only three orders per turn I will still be able to engage in a artillery duel.
Caden is great if you can keep him cool. I think what we are saying is that the game has not changed, you can just afford to put bigger pieces in the pie.
