There are a LOT of units in this game. Heck I find it hard to use every unit that I want to use in a 300 point game. Thankfully the sizes are going to grow soon. I look at my collection and I realise I only use the same units over and OVER and _OVER_! Granted lately I've been sneaking stuff like the SC sortek in there for the point defense, but it seems like the same units over and over.
My style seem's to always be intimidation. Not verbal or physical but with my force's. Every force I build center's around the mech. The infantry and veichles do everything in their power till they DIE to main, kill, and generaly piss on the graves of the enemy forces. 90% of my games end with my mech fully intact, green, with no token's. And the enemy force is either down to the last couple of infantry stands or so hurt it can't even DEAL damage if they actully hit because of heavy armor or some other SE. And then they lose the rest of their force or barely sqweek by with a peasant company limping on the stubs that used to be it's legs. I mean think about it.
If you faced the same person, repeaditly, and everytime you play him or her they use the same mech, and they are not even using a cheese force, and everytime either the mech walks away without a scratch or damage that any body shop could fix in less then an hour (2 or 3 clicks of dmage) would you not find that intimidating? I mean even I have lost a couple of times but in most cases my mech was far from salvage and they got me by keeping their higher point mech just barely out of salvage I'd still find that intimidating over time. I mean I had one guy that groaned everytime he'd see a mech like Malisa or Janis or Scott Tracyk in my armies.
Is it all my imagination or am I really being intimidating with useing the same things over and over... heck I haven't played for over 3 months but STILL this makes me wonder every time I think about fianly getting back into the game
I have got that to. alot of the time when a tourney starts and match ups are annouced I get the groans of dismay. while I dont use the same mech all the time I use the same sort of mech that fits my style. I think the intimadation factor is more your style of play in relation to your opponents. if they cant beat you even when they feel they played there best they are going to be intimadated by you. half the people I play I beat before the first peice of terrain is set.
My tactics tend to have me running units to mid feild making beach heads. Then I start probing here and there using mixed formations of infantry and veichles. I keep the mech in the back feild almost taunting my opponent to come after it. Which in 60% of the cases they do and my army pounces and rips apart whatever was sent after my mech... heck... the first time I played Malisa my oponent did even take the alpha strike into consideration and lost his mech before the 10th move. Just "poof" and his DF centurian was just dust in the wind.
thats more your style you use the mech as it showed be used. its a champion. let its minion go in and take the brunt of the punishment. it has never made any sense to me why I would risk a 3rd of my army in the first few turns of the game. but then again by MWrealms views I'm a cheese player because I use balanced armies and artillery
Intimidated is a stupid word to use in a game. It IS just a game, so there is no reason to be intimdated by anything. It is supposed to be fun. Losing means nothing and neither does winning as long as the game remains fun.
kenjelly I agree w/ you but tourney are comeptions and most people would like to win. personally I dont mind losing, if I played my best. but when I do lose and I played to the best of my ablities I might just get intimidated by that player, especially if he/she has done something I have never thought of.
I believe that the "intimidation" you are describing comes from your play style rather than the mech you are playing. I mean, what kinda person gets intimidated playing the same mech every time? If you did this for three months, and no one found out a way to counter the army you made, pack up your pieces, go elsewhere, and find some competition, because you sure aren't getting it there.

That happens to me too, quite a bit of the time. I've gotten a reputation to play a nasty SS mech and support it well. My most well known armies feature a mech like Jaqueline Tadaka or Diane Jameson with 2-3 Kage formations for support and a pair of Sprints, sometimes I have a DI Towed AA with J37 if the game is a bit larger, 90% of the time I'll lose a Sprint and an infantry piece or two with my mech's paint scratched if hit at all. I've had similar success with Catalina Trujilo and Liao Minigun Cycles. Around here people don't appreciate that I took time to match my infantry with my mech to keep it screened and manage heat to the routine of action, action, pass (You have to with a SS heat dial). I wouldn't call it a groan, but many players act relieved when they're not the next to be my opponent. Don't get me wrong, I mix it up too, but if I'm focused on a prize or campaign victory for my faction, I do look for a win without using cheese.
Edit: Actually, I would call it intimidation. When I played Mile High Battle, 100% of my opponents focused so tightly on Rusty Cooper that My Kages and JT were in their deployment zone within 3-4 turns, unmolested.
Edit 2: That's exactly what I did, I now play at 2 venues, for competition I drive 45 minutes each way.

While the fun bit is bang on the mark, the comment about intimidation is a little rough - games everywhere are about pitting people against each other. Tactics are based on the principles of dealing with what you can do, and what the opposition will probably do. Those who are skilled in this can swing an opponent into doing something they don't really want to. Or THINK they want to! Intimidation, in a much more beneign incarnation, is central to this game. If you make your opponent react differently to how they were intending, or if they avoid a particular unit or formation because it would be dumb for them to engage it, THAT's intimidation.
The difference here is that (hopefully, unless the people playing have lost touch with WHY we play the games..) all parties can laugh and enjoy what's happening over a beer (or non-achoholic drink, depending on age and beverage preference) :)
That makes a lot of sense, I like your analysis. So if someone is "scared" of your piece enough to try to hit it with 7 pogs and everyone can laugh about it, then it's alright. :)
White Knight: What you are saying makes complete sense and I agree with you mostly. I suppose if I see an opponent's force that is usually superior to mine (I think you can tell most of the time), I will change my original tactics. What I will usually do then is more risky stuff which might or might not work, but they are still fun to try, and hilarious when they do work.
