Just wanted to know what everyones favorite mech game was
.....personally I like MW3 cause the mechs are the most manuverable and weapons deal the most damage in MW3.....so its a better test of piloting/gunnery skills.
i dunno, 3 was great for accuracy, but 4 put far more emphasis on piloting and balanced out the boating that was a major problem in 3. 2 is just too darn fun... :p i love how the training guy keeps insulting you... had a lot of flavour. assault is kinda poor, being an all action game with little-no sim value. my vote goes to 3.
Graphicswise definitely MW3, as well as for accurately depciting CBT.
But, as the others already pointed out, that left room for abuse.
The Slot System used in MW4 is much better.
Oh, and MW4 has cooler weather effects.
I havent played 2 in a long time, but I think I liked 3 the best. It had more freedom with customization than four did, I think the omni-mechs in 4 should have had more omni racks or something.
But in MW:4BK you could pilot a Wolfhound, and since that's been my favorite inner sphere mech for ages (dont know why exactly) I play 4 more often.
MW3 and up are an INSULT to the BattleTech heritage. When 3 came around you could build mechs that would litterly seld distruct according to the CBT rules of construction and heat effects. MW3 and up.. is what I call the the QUAKE stage.. they dummied up the game to please the QUAKE crowd.
With MW2 there was at least a lot of thinking that had to inot design, engine size, heat sinks, etc.. It followed the CBT rules. They way it should be. You didn't have a lot of POP-TARTING like you have today. AND if I remeber right in MW2 you could set it so that there was no cross-tech.
The ONLY good think about MW3 and up that I do like is how they game specificaly sets what type of weapons you can have in certain parts. That is one idea I really like over MW2.
Otherwise MW3 and MW4 should have their name changed to QUAKE or UNREAL.. because thats what it has become. Maybe I am beein a little harsh since I grew up playing CBT..
IronMouse, I grew up with CBT too, and I think that MW4 is a good *computer game*.
The original MW, however, had the best overall amount of freedom, playing like a campaign right out of the Mercenaries' Handbook. Very faithful to the "feel" of Battletech. Random and infinitely playable, like Elite or Space Trader.
MW2 was cool but took a much more limited scope. Still, being a Clanner is a very cool experience, giving a distinct set of parameters to the game, with Trials, Bidding etc.
I didn't get a chance to play MW3, but I enjoy MW4 Mercs immensely as a game which gives you lots of high-level control (like Activision's new BattleZone, but without the unit/base construction) and has great environment and weapons graphics, and really good BattleMech movement.
Construction was more limited than CBT, but I almost like the "slot" system better. CBT was unchanged for 18 years, and better rules for wargame systems have been developed since then. (Maybe not in MW:DA, though.)
The Merc aspect of MW4 is nowhere near as open-ended and fun as in the original Activision/Dynamic MW.
Dude i loved Mechwarrior 3. i just wouldnt put and autocannon on a summoner shoulder mount. cause i like realism. Mechwarrior 4 is fun but the explosians are so lame. mech 3 seems a lot more like the way mechs get taken out. You can actually see internals when you blow through armor. The mechs would really get punished when they get hit in the face from an autocannon twenty. But the thing that really puts it ahead of 4 is that there are no cheesy reacter explosians EVERY TIME a mech dies.
Mechwarrior 3 all the way. Best graphics, sounds are awesome, storyline written by Loren Coleman, felt like a real simulator. Pirates Moon is even beter (except for the small amount of maps :( ).
I had a friend burn me a copy of MW:4 mercs, because I wanted to try it out before I spent $$ on it. What a flaming piece of ####. Graphics are a step back, sound is worse, physics are herky-jerky, and Cyberlore flamboyantly promotes themselves throughout the game (bildboards, unit icon...). Most of the 'mechs apparently use the same movement pattern, so the light 'mechs look like a film in fast-motion. Gauss rifles look stupid and sound stupid (super-sonic squiggle?). Lasers sound terrible and look "unatural". Cocpit view is bland/ugly, I think they were shooting for more of a 3rd-person view crowd.
I prefer MW 3 out of all of them thus far. I love the system for customizing the mechs, as close to classic Battletech as I could hope for. The damages and ranges for certain items seemed a little off, but aside from that, it was really fun to play.
Heck, I still dust it off and run through it now and then.
I played MW1 once, but it was on hyper speed or something and I think a Jenner took me out in two seconds before I could figure out what was happening.
MW2 had by far the best music I have ever heard from a computer game. I played it for the music! The second Jade Falcon mission, with my favorite song, I would sychronize my actions with music, and thus run over the mountain and engage the enemies right as the music climaxes. Plus, you get to be the clans. This was the first game I played, and I miss that aspect so much. GBL exp. was really cool, but I did not take to well to the Merc exp.
MW3 had both excellent graphics and gameplay. I liked it a lot, but thought the legging tactics took away from the fun. Also, the best opening movie! I am stil waiting for some MW:DA Fireflies to pit them and a Vulture and Atlas against a Timberwolf and Summoner.
MW4 was fun, but not for the old reasons. It differed too much from the previous games, and while fun to play once in a while (my tiny Uller/Osiris/Cougar lapping the assault 'Mechs with a narc beacon and flamers is so fun), it is not a "battletech" game to me.
Never played MA, but from what I heard, I would not like it for reasons similar to MW4.
MC1&2 were excellent games! I wish I still had them to play.
The old RPG-like games were fun as well. At least the first one when you are fleeing Kurita's takeover. The second had its high points (Urbanmechs!), but lacked the same feel. What were these called, anyways? Jeez, I have not played them in seven or eight years now...
My favorite is the MW4 series of games. I like these the best for one simple reason, online play. Online play for MW3 really was super bad. You either has super fast Shadow Cats running around with 14 ER Smalls or 14 Flamers or you had bigger mechs running around with 2 UAC20's or 14 LRM 5's or whatever. Very limited in what was useable for the "metagame" online. lol.
I think the graphics and movement for MW4 are "more realistic" to how I would think a Mech would move. No more high flying areobatics using jumpjets. Storyline in all of them were very straight forward and fun. I would say I probably enjoyed the MW2 series the most at the time it came out. Never played it online though.
