Almost everyone i know collects SC, BR and DF to a certain extent.
For starters, i suggest u get BR. They got some powerful nons like Lego and Targe. With the implementation of 450/3, high-pointed units will be more valuable.
Highlanders are obviously the best faction since there will be no doubt in your mind that you used superiour tactical thought to win the battle since your units aren't good enough to do it by themselves.
you can never go wrong with dragon's fury or spirit cat. if you';re into challenge go for highlander, steel wolves or swordsworn... if you want to be classy go for ROTS or storm hammer or liao... if you want to be different go bannson's.

And DF does it all without having to rely on long weapons ranges or armor se's.... ;)
It also takes superior tactical ability to use a unit that has lower defences and no armor se's.
DF is all about surgical strikes.
They lie in wait till the right moment.
One might argue that Dragon's are all about exploiting cheese since they do that very well and never having badly designed units. Also if you have Dragon's Fury Faction Dice they are loaded because I've never seen a set roll less than 14.

The Dragons Fury are not cheesy in and of themselves. A DF Faction pure army is not cheesy by definition. As to the dice, they are not all loaded in a good way, just badly balanced. I had to get rid of some I had because they did not roll over a 10 for 3 straight games, with a bunch of critical hits added in.

Highlanders may have a longer weapons range, but they do less
damage, overall, than Dragon's Fury units. Plus, unlike Dragon's
Fury, the average Highlanders unit doesn't come equiped with
improved targeting. As for armor SE's, they can be pretty useless
against units equiped with improved targeting and/or armor
piercing munitions. Yes, Dragon's Fury units have lower defenses
than Highlanders, but they're also faster and intended as first
strike units.
So, based on what I've said, I leave it up to you to decide which
faction takes more tactical ability to play. ;)
Pretty much all factions are good to start with. But try to stay away from a few:
Steel Wolves:their "get stronger as you hurt me" thing is hard to play as a newbie.
Liao: their faction abilities can be confusing at first. You also need to play pretty much faction pure with Liao to get all of the faction abilities.
Swordsworn and Stormhammer: both of these have very bad heat dials. You might want to get used to heat management before you jump into these factions.
All in all, play with mixed forces at first. As you go along find out which factions have the characteristics that goes along with you style of fighting the most. By the way, what is your style of fighting? Maybe we can suggest something from that.
Also, do follow the MW universe and if so, what is your favorite faction?
I'd have to say that from a gameplay point of view that Bannson's Raiders are the best faction.
Their strengths
Speed
Long range
Good attacks
Good damage
Decent artillery
Very few repair lines
Their weaknesses
Short dials
No true "gunship" VTOL
Until Counterassualt, their only capacity 3 transport is an LE
Lackluster infantry - although their elite infantry and SRM teams are some of the best infantry in the game
From a storyline point of view, my favorite faction is Dragon's Fury, who are the second best faction in playability (mainly because they have more weeknesses than strengths).
i agree, start out mixed faction until you get to know the game, and then start trading/buying singles to get what you want. i started out hardcore Swordsworn, but eventually i ended up playing SC...
oh, and a lot of people on these boards like showing animocity towards SC. some of it is rightly so, as Arnis Drummond (the Dasher II from LI) is a very VERY powerful mech...well, that and other certain recently announced mechs and units from the next set. but don't let them trick you into thinking we're all powerful or wizkids favorite faction:
1) i'm sure different people at wizkids have their different favorite factions
2) as someone else said, we're not quite exceptional at everything, (except for speed, our units are VERY fast across the board) we're just good at many things and keep our stats for a good while after taking damage.
3) web don't have/use many SEs, but i haven't found that to be much of a problem. we also don't have much in the way of artillery (unless you use a Mercenary piece), nor do we have a transport that could tow one around, but we have units/ways to counter our opponenet's stuff like that...so we get by.
EVERYONE: Stop attacking each other. HL players: we get it. You're screwed compared to other factions right now. No need to complain about another factions battleforce, escpecially when it comes off like you are complaining about their players. This board has gotten VERY good at attacking other players based on the logo just below their screen name, and don't think I'm just attacking HLers, for I brought them up because some of their fans happened to be the guilty in this case. Several members that are fans of EACH faction are guilty of this, and its BS. Instead of being considered fellow MWDA players, we are judged by faction affiliation, and even though its fun sometimes for the occasional in-character rant or contest, some should-be in-character feelings I think are bleeding through in your everyday posts.

and PS, the term "cheese" around here roughly translates to: "what I lost to last weekend".
