Now, I admit I might not be reading the FAQ right, but how can you say charge is gone? Mechs now take 1/2 their damage vaule, and IT can no longer be used on a charge yes, but:
Arnis can still deal 5 damage and take 2 clicks in return
So can all chargemonekys. How is this a fix? If I am not reading it right please let me know!!!!
Well, it's something. It may not be perfect, but what is? Every click of damage is one. On the plus-side, a charging 'Mech can't use his Brawling SE in a charge. If I'm not mistaken that used to be very useful for a charge too originally.
Brawling doesn't require a CC order, so it still applies. It's referring to H2H weapon and Rapid Strike. And IT was never used for charges, because IT is used only when giving a RANGED combat order. All this FAQ does is force the mech to take 1/2 of its primary damage. This makes brawling even more powerful than before, because it saves you some damage.
Except now if Arnis decides to charge he loses his ten attack and his defence drops to a 21.
This makes him more manageable and the tough to hit units like the Liao Shockwave (base 22) would make people think Twice about charging on in with Arnis.
I like it that even if they miss they take the damage.
Dont get me wrong, I love the new rule, but I think we will still see charge. Of course, now there is more thought put into a charge, because of the extra damage......
Ok, I get it now, and I like it, time to join the celebration!
Charge isn't gone, in fact, the tradeoff of taking 2 damage to inflict 5 is still good on a 'Mech like Arnis. But, it's going to make people think a bit harder about making that charge. Charge puts the charger in base contact with an opposing unit, usually a 'Mech, and probably within striking range of other enemy units. It costs more damage now, not to mention heat. Anything that adds to the risk of charging, even if it's just 1 extra click of damage, increases the risk and likelihood that retaliation for the charge will be swift and brutal.
Charge will probably always be a part of the game, but now it's more of a last-ditch attack, not a prominent winning strategy. Hopefully.
From the comments, it looks like a helluva lot of people thought you could use IT with a charge. Scary. Well, at least the change clears up the confusion some have had with trying to use IT with special attacks, but it seems to have confused everyone about the effects of armour and brawling. I'm going to love reading the dozens of questions about all of those over the next few days :(
This change really doesn't do much to the average 'mech with a three or four primary damage. And BR 'mechs with no repair markers are still going to be king. Three Legos and a couple RVs and let the good times roll. The big losers here are the brawling fatties (Jung Chae in particular). Suddenly, charging that grappled and loaded maxim, hit or miss, may strip you of enough of your stats to cost you the 'mech over the next few turns.
Charge wasn't meant to be gone. It was redesigned to make the risks involved more risky.
Arnis is still good. But not as good as other fast agility mechs with decent range ( BR shadowcatII, BR mongoose).
Simply because Agility is not worth the points it once was.
Arnis has fell from grace so to speak but that doesn't mean he isn't good. Out of all the agility fast competitive mechs, Arnis has suffered the most with the change.
After 2 damage Arnis has 9 attack, 3 damage, and 19 defense, hardly worth the 160 points. Even if he connects for 5, the trade off, though it may seem small, is huge. 2 damage as oppossed to 1 is critical in Arnis Drummond's case.
Charge won't be really gone until they remove the sentence from the SE's that allow charge, ram and dfa to ignore heavy and hardened armor. If that got eliminated then you would see a drastic decline of charging.
