Well, I've decided to try out MW and I have a few questions that hopefully the more experienced players can assist me with.
1. Rule Book from the Starter. Should I just chuck this thing or are the rules enough to get me started in understanding the game. I've already read thru the starter rules, plus the suppl rules that came in the Death From Above and Fire For Effect expansions.
2. How do most people collect? I have no intention of getting complete sets, but from my initial purchase, I have quite an array of units. I pulled three Uniques, so I was considering focusing on those factions, but it seems like I have more choices of support units in other factions. I see that it's okay to mix factions, but for some reason I just have a hard time mixing. Is that a normal thing??
3. The Marquee is this weekend. Should I dare to throw my hat in the ring or will my lack of experience be too much for seasoned gamers to handle?

>Go to wizkidsgames site get the most recent ROW & SEC.

>Find a faction or two that you seem to like and dont worry about collection alot of the others perhapes a token unit or three for the various scenarios that require them.

>YES, My first Marquee happened to be the 2nd game that I ever played ( FFE Marquee ), I won Fellowship.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
>Marquee try to have a good selection of mech, vehicle, vtol, and infantry that work well together and if at all possible try to have 3-5 infantry / vehicle for formation ability due to lack of orders.
First off, welcome to my favorite hobby/addiction. It's always good to see new people coming in. As for your questions:
1. If you look at the main page of this site, there is an updated rule book you can read or print out. This contains the updated information from rulings that were made after the book came out.
2. This is a tough one. I am a collector, so I have not had to pick 2 or 3 factions. The best advice I can give is to play in as many games as you can over the next few weeks. This will allow you to get a feel for each faction's strengths and weaknesses. Whichever ones most closely reflect your play style will be the best choice.
3. No doubt, go for it. I would suggest showing up early so you can talk to the Battlemaster and go over anything you may not be clear on. Since the Marquee is a sealed event, it will somewhat level the playing field, as everyone has to build out of what they pull. Also, there's a good chance you won't leave empty-handed, as there is a trend of giving the fellowship prize to the new guy.
I hope this has helped some. Again, welcome aboard!
Good morning. I would recommend that you download the new (updated) rule book and SEC card from the WK site. This will have everything that you need to get started. The FAQ would also help for the odds and ends that the rule book missed.
As for collecting, I would not base your decision around the uniques that you have pulled. Look at what you have and what faction appeals to you. You can download the Faction Background for House LIAO, ROTS and the Stormhammers also from the WK site. This will give you a basis to start with. I know that there a quite a few people here that can give you a better pro's and con's listing for each faction, so just ask around or better yet check some of the newer posts regarding the CounterAssault Pulls and such.
Finally, in the case of the Marquee, give it a shot. Yes, as you mentioned you are new to the game, but if the people that play the game in your area have a high level of "sportmanship" they will more than likely work with you as you play the game. Plus think of this as your "Baptism by Fire". You have to get in there and play in a major tournament at some time. And you get to add some more pieces to your collection.
#1 The books fine don't toss it it is currentlywhat I and the rest of my fellow players use to help define problems that come up in the games. (i.e.: can you break and charge at the same time?)
#2 I would collect the factions that you have the uniques you currently have right now. I'd have to hear what uniques you got to help with this though.
#3 Sure give it a try the seasoned players will most likely give you some advice on how to play better. So go ahead and do it, you will learn how to play better and not make foolish mistakes. trust me it helps! ;)
Just to clarify relyt post about the marquee. You only have to bring a Liao or Swordsworn unit with you, along with the other accesories (rules, die, measuring tape, etc.)
The Marquee is a sealed booster event, which means you will have to buy 3 boosters at the venue you are playing at and use the units plus the L or SS unit you brought.
I think relyt was trying to say you should try to use units from the boosters that are from the same faction so you can use them with fire teams and movement teams to save on orders.
relyt: Not saying you were wrong, just clarifying the Marquee rules for the new guy so he wouldn't be confused and bring a whole army with him.
DS-00-0, FSD you also need to go to the WK Mech home page and read the tourny rules that govern this scenario. There are to special rules for this tourny only that may govern what L or SS unit you bring with you.
1. Get the new rules from the website. Saves you the hassle of having to unlearn things. If you are a HeroClix player (I think I recognize the callsign) the big things you'll have to learn are the different bases and the things they can and can not do. But, you'll do fine.
2. Since you are starting with the Marquee, (see 3) see what units you pull, like the looks of, and do well with. There are a ton of threads talking about the various factions and the strengths and weaknesses of each. Read as many of them as you can. The only word of warning I will give you is that the Steel Wolves are very tricky to play well. They get their best clix after taking damage. So start with them at your peril, and forewarned.
3. Go for it. I picked a second faction after pulling a Unique in that faction in a Marquee and I've really enjoyed playing it. Let your opponent know you're a newb and that you will have a lot of questions. Normally they will be helpful. They may want to play quickly in order to wipe out your entire army and get a nice boost in the tournament. Price you pay. Forget who said it, but someone once said you learn more from your defeats than your victories. Prepare to learn. You'll do fine.
Yeah, I read thru the rules in reagrds to bringing a unit, changes in range and vent rating increase.
Since I only have one L unit, it looks like I'll end up taking a SS unit. I actually pulled the U Shanetta Yuen so I had considered using her at the Marquee. Otherwise it's a Contruction Mech or a Phoenix Hawk.:ermm:
Shanetta? Nice. That is one I have and my first choice. But, I'm taking Liao and Swordsworn. I have no vested interest in either faction so I can play either side to even things up.
I'm going with Liao, but I've got two tough choices.
Do I go with the Elite Rifleman who has 11 with IT & Decoy not to mention Awe or do I go with Jacyn Bell who has 10 Attack, but a 12" Jump Jet range (DFA) and 22 Heavy armor?
Since I plan on playing in 3 marquees this weekend, I'll probably start with Jacyn tonight and depending on how he does, I'll try the Rifleman on Saturday. Sunday depends on how either one works out.
Yeah, Hack, that Rifleman is a tempting call. I'm looking at the Rifleman, or the Raider MKII if I play Liao. The Raider has no wasted points on range, very doable charge option, Heavy armor, and if I draw some elite Liao, I can pick up Awe. Hmmm. As much as it hurts the RoS player, I may have to gun for Liao.
The nice thing about the Rifleman is you already have the half total you need for Awe. He's @ 238 points and you only need 225 for a 450 game.
Besides, anything I can do to slow down how much the other guy can move. Since the Rifleman only has a 6" movement, Awe, if my die are going to treat me good, can help.
Hey DS. didn't you used to hanf around the HCREALMS boards alot? if you are the same guy, welcome aboard! HC is what got me into clix, but after I came over to MW, I left HC behind, this is a MUCh better game, you'll get the hang of it pretty quick
Originally posted by Warflail You should play Highlanders. Girls dig kilts. :)
You've just got to hope that the guys don't dig the kilt as well!;)
But seriously, 1 and 2 have been covered. As far as playing the Marquee, get out there and give it a go. A good group will give you no end of help and encouragement, and you never know what might happen...
I ran an event last November, where a 12 year old Magic player came along to try MWDA out. We gave him plenty of advice, supplied him with a resonable army for a beginner, and blow me he goes and wins the thing!
