Can I safely say, that EVERYBODY enjoyed the fact that there was no artillery raining down on us every turn? I realized after the first few games just how much I hate artillery.
Honestly, it felt great that I did not have to do the 28" dash over to my opponent's side, or do the happy arty dance with the Phoenix Hawk I pulled.
I loved the sealed format even more, in that, I found usefulness in my SW ForetryMOD-B, and almsot everything else I pulled. Suddenly, I was not up against SS Arrow IV, SH Aesirs, and Arnis all day. Trikes were not humping my 'Mechs leg, and only an occasional ATV would be present. I wish that there would be mroe sealed tournaments, as I think they level the playing field, and generally make play more fun.
Furthermore, going back t my original point about artillery, it was also nice to be able to set up some real tactics, instead of "place pog on X; now move your ####." I was able to set up some very sweet plays, and my opponent's did as well. I would be fine if I never saw artillery again.
Now before I get 10 million people in Clan BA about to flame me, I am not saying that arty should be:
reduced
removed
burned in a pagan fashion
I am just saying that I enjoy the game more without it. does anybody else feel the same?
It was fine in a sealed enviroment... but I like to play with arty... just not the total proliferation of pogs that make it seem like you came to the table to play poker... but yeah, this weekend was fun, but in a constructed enviroment, I like to have my artillery... in moderation ;)
I've only played a few games, but my favorites were the ones that have had little to no artillery. True, I like my Sniper or my Long Tom as much as the next guy, but, usually, the less arty, the better.
I once saw a 1000-Point game with *8* artillery pieces. True, I still one (He forgot AA guns, so my Lamprey/Cavalier combos just went up the line, mowing them down :)), but, jeebus, 8!
Then again, I usually use 2-3 Artillery pieces. Maybe a new rule limiting it to 2 arty pieces per game? It would bring 'Mechs and heavy tanks back into focus (How I'd love to be able to play a nice, entrenched armor group again), since you could leave them in one spot for several turns without worrying about shells/Arrow IV Missiles coming down like all the d@mn snow here!
We had to play it. The Battlemaster ruled that ranged combat attacks could not be used. Since the artillery attack derived from a ranged combat order, then it was exempt (along with indirect ballistics).. I ended up beating the one team with 3 artillery and 1 mortar squad, but that's because I had 3 mechs to his one and some ATV Squads to base one or two until I could get over there...
Thorgrin. Man you got hosed. There might have been some artillery capabiel of firing under 6" range restriction, but they wouldn't last long. Your BM screwed up.
Yes, it was great fun. I pulled the Bounty Hunter and hacked my way to glory. I charge only once in the 3 games despite the ranged restriction.
Sealed games are usually not a problem with artillery. Its too hard to get all the good stuff.
One thing I realized whilst playing the Bounty Hunter is that he would never survive a regular hth. Artillery would shell him to death especially now that charge is a painful option. Once he loses evade, he is toast.
Why WK decided to "barrage" us with cheap, highly effective artillery in CA is beyond my understanding. The POGs are really going to fly now. MECHwarrior is way more fun than POGwarrior. Just when this game seems to be picking up steam, WK hands us more broken artillery.
just for fun I played a 1500 point army w/ the following:
Vikki Drexel
DF Arrow IV tank
Liao Arrow IV tank
DF towed AA
2 SSw Mortar teams
2 BR Mortar Teams
1 DF Mortar team.
If I got my command rolls I could lay down 11 pogs in a turn.
However, back to the tread...
I agree with what seems to be the general consesus. Artillry isnt necessarily BAD, but armies are generally more fun without them
I didn't mind it too much. 2 guys brought their artillery and I only had to face one. The problem with the guy with multiple artillery was he couldn't hit me once I based him and it just went downhill from there. I also heated up his Centurion and got lucky that he shut down. :) Most people say don't heat him up because he gets those wild bonuses, but I figured I should do it just to try it.
However, if I would have known I would have brought something other than what I played. No artillery, but probably would have brought an infantry to play as many mechs as I pulled (they were all under 450 points easily). Ah well.
It was still a good time, however. Stupid dice rolls just kill me. :)

The most artillery I've faced in a game was five units, 4 of them artillery tanks and Viki Drexel. Thankfully this was for Out To Pasture, and thus, the pogs easily evaded. But I much prefer playing games that have none to 2 artillery pieces total on the board.
Yeah, no arty was nice, but there were still other problems. e.g. if the opponent pulled a Garott you still had the unhitable firat-shot tankdrop - pretty lethal for CA when otherwise all vehicles except the Calvary were useless (either high min or non-360 arc). With the tankdrop though, big 'Mechs were still greatly endangered, without an effective response.
['fortunately the only opponent who got this got a BR Defence tank - 4AP, but the 8 attack was luckily not enough to hit my LI Targe or SC MADII even with the first shot in the back.
I had an opponent's Dean Lanos running around like wild attempting to stay away from the :^^^: Stormhammers Cavalry Attack Heli I pulled. I just should have taken more risks than I had, it cost me the championship. :(
