I play at about 3 different venues. at 2 of them almost all the players are good sports ( as in letting some things slide not stalling, basically making sure there opponent has fun ) the other is the opposite extreme constant bickering and forgetting of rules at key moments. people only seem to have a problem w/ cheese at venuee 3. now this is just an observation and I am not calling people who complain about cheese bad players, I'm just saying that those of us who dont really see anything really wrong w/ mechwarrior may be playing at different types of venuees where we dont always face moutains of cheese. feel free to sound off if you agree or disagree but please be civil about it, we dont all have the same mw experiances.
Majority of the time, I have fun playing. I have fought players out of your venue class 3. I usually stomp the crud out of their army because they spend more energy gripping and less thinking.
Just play, have fun. That is a good idea to play for.
:p
Where I play, most of the 12 to 20 regulars are good folk. No lawyering and pretty easygoing. Most play faction pure. But there are a couple younger players who are always looking for the newest, easiest way to win.
I'm not fond of the term 'cheese' but I guess it would describe their armies and tactics. The latest trick is arty. They lay down 4 or 5 markers, without pushing, every turn. But I digress.
I guess my point is that, while the overall attitude at this venue is laid back and casual, the other type players are there as well.

All I have to say to Artillery is: "Three units" - Sprint Scout VTOL, Minigun Cycles and Scout ATVs. This is to tie up the artillery while my 'Mech is going to take it's time pulling you apart, one wielding at a time.

None of those work vs a competant opponent. I havent seen a fast infiltrator or speedy VTOL tie up an artillery unit since uh... March of last year?
I have not the fortune or fun of playing all arty armies more than a few times. nearly 100% of the players play w/ some semblance of a balanced army, although rarely faction pure in tournaments.
I REALLY didn't mean to sidetrack this thread onto the subject of artillery. I would, however, like to address the responses.
First, those fast-movers work with some (mostly older) types of arty - sometimes. Second, with the variety of cheap AP arty today, you don't have to devote your whole build total to artillery to lay down 4 markers each turn. Ex: 4 SS Arrow IV's = 204pts. I own 3, myself.
I face a tank dropper and an arty feind every week. And my arty guy doesn't screen...and only me and the tank dropper (Fearless? You out there?) use fast movers to tie him up. It really irks him when I smoke his arty army every week.
Tank Dropper (Fearless) is pretty darn good. I like facinghis tank drop army because it makes me think. He beat me last time too when I deviated from my normal units and brought Mason out. Mason's DV is just too low to deal with a tank drop.
But, we are all good sports for the most part. Arty-man? No comment...dancing and singing when his opponents mech shuts down?
At the marquee he showed me his newest Liao additions. he has 4 Arrow IV's and a couple AA's to deal with my Balacs. This is not going to be fun. :(
That's okay T, I've got 4 Swordsworn Mjolnirs to deal with his
Arrow IV's! ;) If he gets too unruly, I'll just lay the Swordsworn
smack down on him! SSw got some nice, mobile and pushable
mechs in this set. As we all know, that's the bane of artillery
armies! :)
I plan on using HL Shun's to drop some infantry on him. let him roll a 14 with his AA if he can. Meanwhile his arty get's tied up and Clyde smokes his AA from 14" away. :)
Venues out in my area (including my own) see a bit of cheese but its usually all in good fun. We are a competitive bunch and we may complain (usually about our own die rolls being low for the evening whether they really are or not ;-) but we have fun and enjoy playing.
I find it interesting watching how others deal with armies of cheese. It doesnt happen too often but every now and then there is a prize that is highly desired and a bit a cheese my be opened up at the venue.
As for rules lawyering, we do it, but we do it to make sure we all clearly understand the rules as they stand. I dont want to see somebody lose because of a bad ruling that I may make so I encourage everybody to know to rules well so that when I am wrong they can call me out on it and vice versa. However we rarely ever bicker over them. Most complaining stops when the games begin and its all about tactics, strategies and fun.
