Hey, I just figured out the tennis thing. I'm not as dumb as I look.
I'm going to try to make Origins this year. Get my hands on Mister Alpha Strike.

Conventions are open to the public (just not GAMA, which is a trade show for retailers).
In the past to get a specific giveaway, it usually required a $50 or $100 purchase of product to get it.
Admission to Origins and Gencon is around $25-$30 per day. If you buy a 4 day pass, its much cheaper on a day by day basis. Not sure about the comicons, though, but expect to spend at least $15 a day to get in.
As for what is there. Depends on what con you're talking about. If you go to a big gaming convention, you'll have tons of games available (for a small fee) and a huge dealer room with anybody who is somebody in gaming selling their wares.
