It just dawned on me as I arose from the throne a few minutes ago that with the growing restlesness in the MW community, some people might actually be reassurring themselves that MW is a captive market with little or no other alternatives.
For most of the people I observe around our venue, MW constitutes only one of several games currently holding players interests. Magic is a pretty common alternative, followed by other clix games. D&D however is coming on pretty strong. So it might be time to give it a try.
If you're playing any other game aside from mechwarrior please post. Let us know.. Better yet, let them...
Well, i think i will start playing Classic Battletech again because in this game i don`t have to throw away half of my miniature collection, because they are "retired".
Grendell - If you like Lord of the Rings, you could try the LOTR Miniatures Game that was released by Sabretoothgames. A REALLY GOOD GAME. It plays a lot like Warhammer, minus the complicated rules =), plus the average game time for 1 skirmish is about 15 to 20 mins. (talk about fast!). I've got some demo kits if you're interested to try it out.
As for D&D Minis, it's quite ok, particularly if you are a D&D fanatic. Sculpt wise it's great, plus the game play is quite fast, specially if the players are familiar with D&D. It's also a great alternative to MW. =)
I was thinking of LotR hex minis and Classic BT and maybe some more BFG. Not sure I want to get into 40k yet. This retirement garbage is pushing me close though.
"Giant robot" style games - CAV (Reaper Miniatures) and Warmachine. CAV is a combined arms mecha game, while Warmachine is steam-powered robots in a fantasy/tech setting.
Fantasy games - D&D Miniatures, picked up my old Warmaster stuff and hauled my Warhammer out of the closet.
Future games - There's a Star Wars CMG coming out in August that looks like it will be worth investing in - at least 4 starters and a case or so of boosters. More, if I like it.
I plan to keep playing until the bitter end; however, my wife and I are about to reduce our MW collection "down" to just four factions.
I just bought a weight set yesterday, a new plinking rifle, and started looking for new wheels/bearings for my roller blades. After I find my basketball needle, I think I'm going to spend more time with my other, non-gaming hobbies. After all, we're starting to see the sun again, here, in Mid-Western Oregon.
I wasn't much of a gamer before MW, so there is no other gaming hobby that calls.
I plan to keep playing Mech Warrior as long as I can. If everyone quits and I have to start handing out peices to hobos to get them to play with me I probably will.
(imagines himself lying on the side of the road with a sign that reads: WiLL pLAy dARk Age fOr FOOd)
I also play D&D, though not for much longer, as my party is breaking up to head off to colleges. Still if you can locate three or more players who wont argue about everything, make snide unwanted comments to one another, try to get one another killed (by action, lack of it) *demand* rerolls, and overall make you wish you'd never agreed to play in the first place, I recomend it big time! It's great fun.
First off, I'm not stopping either. Prize support being what it is in Greece, most of the games I play would be "unrestricted" anyway..So this doesn't really affect me.
Still, if you're going to check new games out, try Warzone. It's a sci-fi skirmish game with great rules.Currently it's being revived as Ultimate Warzone, so I'm painting up my armies and getting ready for the book to ship out..The miniatures look great, too...
Warmachine is the closest to this game that I have ever played and liked. Mechwarrior was the first "wargame" that I played. I used to play just RPG's. I first played Battltech when I was a kid. I bought the 1st ed box set with the card board mechs for 1$ at a bargin store when I was like 10. Warmachine has the best rules I have read so far. Has a fantasy setting with "mech" but they are steam powered gollems. I like it far better than most games out there right now. Also is is less old than Mechwarrior and most players are new to the game.
I'm not quitting mechwarrior, but I would reccomend classic battletech. My friend and I played the quick start game from classicbattletech.com yesterday and it was pretty fun.
Definetly give Warmachine a try. The play is very balanced, the support from the company is excellent (they actually answer questions and provide support through their forums) and if you have a good grasp of basic tactics and strategy you'll be able to pick up the basics pretty quickly.
CBT of course, and you can still find lots of old pieces, plus there are no dials to be used or replaced, just paper.
Warmachine is obviously a big possibility, though I am moving into Confrontation myself, which is not available everywhere yet, but if you look for it, it has beautiful pieces.
And also D&D, particularly Midnight and Forgotten Realms settings for me, though the new DragonLance book was quite fun, and got me interested again in that world.
CBT of course
Combat Assault Vehicles (CAV)
Magic (I used to play it and got out cause of set cycling like MW is going to do ... but at least Magic would be much cheaper by comparison given the cost-per-unit).
