Well, with my recent aquisitions from a player leaving MW at my venue (and not because of the proposed set retirements), I can finally build a Dragon's Fury pure army. My problem before is that I had a lack of decent infantry, but that's fixed now. Here's the army.
Erin Johnston
:^^^: Fenrir Battle Armour
:^^^: Trike Squad x 2
:^^: Maxim Mk2 Transport
:^^: Purifier Battle Armour x 4
:^: Clan Battle Armour x 2
11 figs @ 450 points
So far what I'm looking at is having the two Clan Battle Armour and the Fenrir ride around in the Maxim while one purifier teams up with the Trike Squads if there's no immediate need for early basing. Simple, efficient, lethal. :) Comments?
Here's why. To make them effective you need to haul them around in a maxim. I believe it's far more effective to use a string of ATV's, instead of that group.
CBA's have Highlander attack values, a 6. And while they do have flamers so do ATV's. The Fenrir is nice because it moves quickly and has pulse however You've got over 60 points locked up in the Maxim and it's load (4 units total), instead of a string of ATV's at 56 pts (4 unit total).
Your ATV group has superior advantages of the maxim infantry drop. The can be less order intensive, they can infiltrate, they all have strong attacks, fast as hell, and they are cheap individually.
In almost every DF army as of late I have used fast infiltrating units. Before it was trikes now it will be ATV's. They can get in split, play base and break, and lockdown any threats while I work my power pieces up. But that's how I play and I haven't played all winter so I'm a bit rusty.
If you don't have the ATV's then I'd use the trikes.
Basically if your army had any weaknesses, I think it would be you are vulnerable to meat shielded artillery and VTOL's.
VTOL's would be able to play tag with Erin all day long, even if you tried to constantly move your infantry into providing support against it. Their ability to move up fire and move back out of range is strong.
Erin's a good mech however. Very atypical from our design stand point, but a good mech at any rate. If at all possible I'd puddle jump her to get her where I needed her.
The easy part of nit picking someones army is that you can offer criticism at the most effective scenario to support your argument. We could sit here all day long and go "your army is vulnerable to Arty and VTOL's", but who's to say you'll even see them. But I think Arty and VTOL's will give you a hard time.
Right now you've got a Fattie, Infantry Swarm army type. If your going to run that, I suggest making better infantry selections. Trikes, ATV's, Guila Suits, & Purifiers.
That army makes use of almost all the Purifiers I've got (4 of 5) and all of my Trike Squads. I don't have any of the new Scout ATV Squads or Guila Suits for DF. I do have a couple Shock Troopers, though. Perhaps substitute them with another Purifier in for the CBAs and Fenrir? Gives me another 4 points, and then I can take out the Maxim as well to free another 31. The only unit that I'd have for DF to fill that 35 points is a JESIII though, and I don't think I'd even consider it. :ermm:
But yes, I admit, artillery and shielded artillery can and will give me a problem, but because I've rarely seen VTOLs (especially the SS Balac) and artillery used, I rarely design to counter it.
Your last paragraph is key. Around here we don't get all the power piece armies that it seems that everyone else faces.
Most folks play faction pure and I see a lot of multiple mech armies or assault mechs.
I still build flexable armies that can deal with all sorts of situations, but I don't have to build my army specifically to counter a certain army type.
It all comes down to know your enemy, know your environment. No sense bringing an AA gun to counter VTOL's if you know you'll never see them.
I hear you, and I'm most thankful I don't see these cheese style power armies that other venues face off against. Yes, some people have these power pieces (our youngest player has Arnis Drummond), but when they make an appearance, they rarely work. I'll be sure to let you know how my army works out, especially if I swap the Fenrir, CBAs, and Maxim for the Shock Troopers, another Purifier, and a JES/JESIII.
