SS Sun Cobra 141pts
SS Arrow IV 47pts
SS Mortar Squad 16pts
SH Viktor Hanaan 230pts
SH ATV Squad 8pts
446pts
For the SS the Sun Cobra has a pretty decent heat dial, and enough range to help cover Viktor while he moves out. The Arrow can cover the long front with the mortar going for any infiltrators or anyone getting in too close. The ATV could infiltrate if you move first, or hang back and keep the Arrow from getting based in its rear arc or tie up anything unwanted. There's enough points for a BR Peasant Co. but I wanted to keep it pure SS and SH.
looks like a solid army. i would drop the arrow IV since you dont have much infantry to act like a screen. get a good infantry capturee/harraser squad in there (hover bikes of cavaliers/clans) and you have a more versatile army and no arrow IV to get based and killed.
Originally posted by hangman gawd, I wish players like that played around here, I never see a mech in an army, let alone 2. ;)
everybody around here believes that mechs are only for S7. :(
to be honest I hardly bring out mechs any more, I think that they are kinda overpriced and, for me, make it difficult to compete here with them.
Even in the 450/3 environment, hangman? Unless your opponents are running lots of HQs it seems a good 'Mech with good speed and some support could really punish this attitude.
Ah yeah, I only have the SS and the Liao Arrow's so I tend to get their numbers mixed up. For the most part I only collect BR and SH. I do have a few SS pieces from booster drafts. All I've got are as follows:
SS MHI AA Tank
SS Sun Cobra
SS Firestarter
SS Mortar Squad
SS ConstructionMech (the transport one)
I always have a 2 mech minimum when I build. I tend to turn my nose up at vehicles for the most part however they've got that 200pt Swordsworn thing going for this coming scenario. Otherwise I'd only play the arrow and fill the rest with SH.
One benefit about that Sun Cobra is that I won't have to waste an action venting it since it only vents 1.
I've got a capture team I'm trying to piece together using the SS Construction mech in conjunction with SH infantry. I'll post that in a moment.
try this next you play hangman. take 2 or 3 sh phoenix hawks and the rest just the standard fair that is at your venue. base @ break their infantry and kill their artillery fast. you can kill them very quickly and i gaurenty that there will be more mechs showing up just to deal with you (if no sh phoenix hawks then li/df raider or just 1 of the marauders, li shockwave and df raider works well also) happy hunting man :)
SS Arrow IV 51pts
SS MHI AA Defense Tank 56pts
SS Miningmech Mk II 98pts
SH Phoenix Hawk 119pts
SH Anat APC 26pts
SH Salamander BA 25pts
SH Cavalier BA x2 13pts
SH ATV Squad x3 8pts
BR Fa Shih BA 23pts
448pts
Had to throw in a BR Fa Shih so I could get some cheap Grapple. The ATV's can get out and base Artillery. The four battle armors will lounge for a bit inside the Miningmech and APC. The Phoenix Hawk is there to try to heat up a potential mech before the Miningmech charges in and deploys. The APC will catch up and let the other two out. I could keep other units busy with the Arrow and if any choppers decide to get within range the MHI can take a shot or two and defend the Arrow.
while the orders and the points do help, players here are willing to sacrafice two or three units (still cheaper than a mech and mobile HQs are cheap) pushing units in a very aggresive manner and, after some damage, they capture the mechs, swarms of infltration units can tie down a mech, and while they may not hurt them they keep them outta the game, by either forcing them to break or waste their turn attempting to destroy them.
please keep in mind I of all people know how easy it is to come up with a counter to almost any army, so this is just an example of an average army that I may face. I am a big loser, so this may look stupid, and maybe the competiton here is no good, but I see this week after week.
for a few more points than the sun cobra alone (we will imagine that the 221 points for the other mech is used for more inf, AA VTOL, and maybe a tank-drop and we will keep the other units, so I have a couple of arty units and an ATV that is another harraser), I would expect to see something like 10 SS HBs (150 points), now I know that HBs are kinda wimpy, so this is just an example, but the initial movement only require 2 orders to move a total of 10 units that I can afford (point wise) to sacrafice just to get in base contact and force the mechs to either sit there or use orders, hence heat (admititadly a good thing for some mechs, but not SS or SH mechs) if I am lucky enough to get to your mech with some of those bikes 1 or 2 may not be a threat, but 3 will start to cause a bit of worry. now remember these are throwaway units that I do not really care if I lose them or not, they are just harrasers, that will allow my more powerful units to advance. now I know that tank-drops are not what they used to be but it can still be a very scary attack, and my AA also has a good damage with AP, and my arty can still drop some stuff, orders are a problem, but I will have units that, if I do it right by rotating my units, will be able to move every turn, eventualy the main powers on the field (the mechs) will need to stop, and cool or risk shutdown and while the mechs are wasting their time with my harrasers, I can get into a position that will allow my biger units to get some shots off, and all it would take is a couple of hits from my big gun, to cause serious if not delibating damage to your mech.
now I do not know which army will win, but if I came out with the mech army (remember, I am a bad player, I lose way more often than I win) I would get stomped by any army like the one above. I would find my units overwhelmed, not by quality, but by quanity.
so when the same old army that makes my mechs useless (for me) I tend to adapt the same tactics, right or wrong, good or bad, I have found it the only way for me to compete
The SS Phoenix Hawks are awful. I like the Mjornirs myself. Throw a couple of those in there with a solid mech. Charge the enemy power pieces and sweep up with the rest of your army.
