I been looking around on prices on MWDA singles and have noticed that everywhere I've looked the mech (ELH) rifleman (CA 109 I believe) has been sold out. Its not a bad mech... better I think then the other versions.
I like the ELH version (my favorite Merc. Regiment, after all). That
said, at 16 points more, the Stormhammer version does what the
ELH version does. Only better. ;)
I think it is merely OK as far as Mechs go. I do like the damage output this Mech has because of its AP and Pulse SE's. Two targets on both weapons is nice as well. The AnP later in the Mech's dial is interesting and it seems to give the unit some decent utility even after it has been beaten up.
A 9 Attack is decent, but nothing to write home about. Heat Dial is fairly decent as well.
On the flip side though, this unit's defense is rather meager for a unit over 200 points in cost. The Heavy Armor is a nice touch, but it doesn't last long and its utility in actual play is often questionable. The Rifleman is also pretty darn slow. . . making it more of a chore to bring its guns to bear. A 12" range is average these days since there are a whole mess of things that outrange you now.
In a game where you could afford to play on the defensive (ie. no artillery), this Mech would do all right. Still, I can name off several Mechs that are cheaper and would fill the role of "slow, defensive Mech" much better. . . but that is another opinion.
OK, how many times does the dead-horse-Rifleman AA-deal have to beaten?
This is NOT the traditional Rifleman, built for making mincemeat of flying stuff. This one is packing dual RAC5's, which aren't known for range. Also, it lacks the targeting computer that made it an AA Mech in CBT. Other versions have it. This one doesn't.
The SW Rifleman is far better. Wanna arty it? Go ahead .. it can take 2 good hits from an A4 and be pretty much on its sweet spot. Same goes for charging it. This unit is kinda like some of the critters in MK Dungeons. Ya either need to about kill it in one hit from its starting point or else you want to avoid it entirely. Just simply hitting it for average damage is NOT a good idea. :)
