...to quitting? I mean, giving up, '#### WK and their pogs, their ATVs and all the other ####.' Just giving up, selling off and going back to whatever, Magic, CBT, Warhammer, whatever.
I'm getting there. My venue has, sofar been a haven without excessive pogs and such, but people are starting to feel the demons of PogWar breathing down their necks.
One of the few things that's letting me hold on is the light-in-the-tunnel that is Falcon's Prey. Then again, I felt the same way about Counterassault...that light was a train.
Murr...then again, Falcon's Prey is a new design team headed by an actual CBTer, who knows how Battletech works.
So, fellow Mechwarriors, what is it? Hang on and see what August 25th and Falcon's Prey will bring, or say '#### it, I'm out.'
I understand, and have felt, the same frustration. I have also witnessed the degrading style of combat based onthe available units for each new set. I have seen how games have become an excercise in how to win as cheaply as possible.
However, this is not always the case. I have faced honourable foes who have gone on to teach me new and innovative tactics. I have had many a casual game outside the realm of competition where friendship and sportsmanship remain unaffected by "winning". In fact, I can recall the Nationals Qualifier where I faced a fine opponent (AntiElvis..recently BM'ed), with whom I have a "gentleman's agreement" to not use Charge unless no other option is available.
How about I tell you where I stand in this whole "evolution" of the game thing, and you take it for what it's worth.
Personally, I have no care whatsoever how this ends, or what gets added. In the end, it comes down to what *I* choose to field in a friendly casual game with friends. We can decide our own special scenario rules, whether to include a type of unit (artillery, VTOL, whatever), if a particular tacic has other effects (like Charge, Ram and DFA)....
WK could go out of business tomorrow, and it wouldn't affect my want/choice to play the game in the slightest. I have a lot of great stuff, and know how to use it in a manner that's fun for me...*and* my opponent. I *try* to exhibit this manner in tourney play, and maybe influence newer players, but that may be a matter of time.
If Quitting is your choice, and I will not/can not take that away from you. I will tell you, though, that the future of this game...any game really, is a matter of perspective and choice. I for one, would be sad to see you go, but if go you must, then I bid you good luck and wish you the best. If you change your mind, I know *I'll* still be here.
We had two players like that at the one store. Both of them took a one month hiatus and came back with a vengence. They were refreshed and happy to be playing again. Maybe that might help you out.
I've never lost my vigor for MWDA ever since I started playing, but that may be due to my infrequence of gaming. I can only make tournaments 1-2 times a month, and rarely can get a game outside of tournaments due to my work schedule and those of my friends. Perhaps cutting back on the number of tournaments or games you participate in might help as well.
Actually, I have a reverse problem with tournies-I can't get to enough! While I did go last Saturday, before that, it had been 2 months, and 5 before that, since my last tourny! I've been to 3 tournaments-Faction Wars, Repeating History and a venue-thing called Rock-Em Sock-Em Robots (Exactly what you'd think)! I can't cut back my tournaments, that'd be quitting altogether!
However, it is looking up for me for MW. Falcon's Prey, like I said, is a light at the end of the tunnel, and I'll be able to go more often soon, since I'll be able to drive on my own to the nearest venues, 45 min away (I've been reliant on parent's whims to get me to London for games), and my friend is getting into MW. Plus, when my cousin gets around to organizing a game of D&D to teach me, I'll have 10 nerds who are succeptible to learning, so I might be able to recruit more people who won't be corrupted by pogginess.
Murr...Oh, well. I have no immediate plans on quitting, but the pull is there. I've already traded a bunch off, and used lots of MW money for, CBT. Namely,a boxed set and 15 'Mechs. Murr...
Hey, you sound like me and my situation TK, I can only make 1-2 tournaments a month becuase of my work schedule, but the lack of players around the house is what causes me not to participate outside of the venue and the fact that I live about 45 minutes south of the venue I play at. So, in all, I only choose one tournament a month to play in and usually it's the story line events, screw the HTH competitions, I've seen those battle forces and there is no way I'm going to get that competitive over a game.
dude, just play it for fun. if u dont want to play, dont force it, and maybe u will want to come back. But then again, i have a GREAT venue, where i have only ever seen 1 SS arrow, and maybe 4 Arnises.
Murr...we've only got 1 Arrow IV currently, and nobody can ever break with Arnis here, so he dies lots when played.
Actually, it's funny. If someone says 'Breakaway', then rolls, it will work 8/10 times. As soon as Arnis is involved, or they say 'Roll to break Arnis...1. 1. 2. 1. 1. 1. 2. So, he stays in boxes.
I'm tired of playing the same scenario 5 times in a row, I'm tired of paper terrain, I'm tired of units that can run faster then shoot, I'm sick to death of capture on mechs, I'm tired of whining, I'm tired of stupid/useless units (like a melee secondary with no se that's equal or less then primary).
I want free form terrain, I want credible merc units (I'm sorry, that is the single worst thing Wizkids has done, all these other joker factions are disarmed peasants in mechs, but mercs have never stopped fighting and training, why aren't they 10 times the capability the factions are?), I want to just play for fun, with no prizes being played for. I want to be able to swap out the rules that I think suck (such as allowing people to shoot under minimum range, or reducing charge to printed speed only, to playing mech only lance battles), to not have to play people I'd rather not play.
I won't sell my stuff, or get out yet. I'll just paint and mod basically everything, and it'll go in with the rest of my minis. To be honest, the big killer was the set retirement decision. That is just flat out wrong. Sigh....

Maniac
Try CAV
double the range weapons
flexable tourney rules (reaper allows its judges to deside house rules )
no indy mechs
no outragous out of balence arty
hot scantily clad supermodels that demo the game (it was worth a try)
killer mecha designs
customizable mechas
and has a system simular to MWDA
Mil-net.net has a rule book and paper cut-out fold up thingies for downlaod so you can try the game without spending a large amount of money just to see if you like it
I read on here constantly, and see just alot of mad people, people mad at the people they play and poeple mad at wiz kids and people mad at the units them selves I really don't understand it what so ever. Do you realize how many people play this game, and everyone thinks that it should be done different that they have a better way, me personally I think it is just great as it is yeah there are flaws but which game doesnt have them, and the ones Wiz Kids have really arent that big, not enough to really complain about. Then again I must be blessed with the venue I have.....we have no house rules we play right out of the rule books and FAQ's as they come out and we all get along just fine, and make fun of the people on here!no one at my venue plays pog wars, which is good cause arty is the first thing I go for in a game, and me personally I never use it, as far as getting burned out on the game I play through out the week about 4 or 5 times and then I never miss a tourney I go to one every week,
How old are they guys you play with, that could explain there cheap tactics if they are young, those people remind me of button pushers on fighting video games hard to beat cause of there randomness, but can usually be taken out with the same repeated punch, and there is no honor in their victories!
Ever since I started playing the "Believeable rules" by StuManUSA I have found a renewed interest in the game. I no longer complain about the stupid mechanics of the game. Pogs are just now one aspect of the game that isnt overpowering. Charging is now an act of desparation or strategic attack and not the opening attack made. Tank droping NEVER happens and infantry are still useful.
actually the guys I play with very rarely use 'cheap tactics'.
I simply got into wargaming with CBT and Warhammer 40k. Which are simply better systems for relaxed play.
It's boring to play the same scenario 3 or 4 times in a row, while being rushed through the game.
I'd rather play 1 game on terrain I like over 2-4 hours, and get to char with people. I also like to play multiplayer matches. With say 4-6 people playing and then playing 1 side against the other.
It makes for a more comraderie driven game.
If I could, I'd get guys to run a Crimson Skies campaign, or start playing it just for fun. Also would enjoy playing small scale 40k (not quite necromunda, but close). Something with all the 40k armies, but say 300-500 points, and not have to meet the 1 hq and 2 troops selection.
