A buddy and I had a rather heated disagreement today about when you are able to attempt to restart a mech.
This was the situation:
My SC Suncobra hit his SW Kodiac with its energy attack on my turn. After applying the clicks of damage and the click of heat, my buddy had to roll to avoid shutdown for the kodiac.
He failed his roll, thus shutdown occured.
At the beginning of his turn, he claimed he was allowed to attempt to restart the mech because the "avoid engine shutdown" (aka yellow) square was still showing on his heat dial. (note that he had taken no clicks of cooling at this point)
Well, my position is that you do not apply heat affects until after you take a click of heat or cooling. Since the mech had not been given a vent order, or taken any clicks of cooling, he could not attempt to restart (afterall, the heat affects on the dial were the ones that caused the shutdown..so they had been applied during my turn).
Thanks guys.
I'm going to have to print out all of the responses and show him.
Hopefully RaininVA or one of the other WK gurus will respond on their forum so I can get an "official" clarification. (Although I fail to see how the rules could be any clearer on the subject.)
I guess he really didn't want to be shutdown within range of the suncobra and basing range of a formation of 4 sc cba's.
That is right, the only way he can roll for restart is if he takes another click of heat and only if that allows for another avoid shutdown roll. He has to reamain shutdown until the starting position of the heat dial is shown or he makes a successful restart roll on a heat effect. He can however vent his 'mech for it's vent rating every turn until he get's back to the starting position of the dial or he makes a successful restart on a avoid shutdown heat effect
sounds like to me he is just trying to be hard-headed about it. Best thing to do is club him in the head with a blunt object until you soften his cranium up a little or until he sees it your way.
