I'm here at nats, and saw they are running a format called "Mech Hunter" I don't remember all the rules, but it's played on a heroclix grid, and all your units are considered to have no SE. Everyone opens one booster, and plays what's in it.
I have 2 observations of the rules as they were told to me
# 1 they were WAY too complex
# 2 they took almost all of the strategy out of playing MW
Please WK do not run events like this again. I did not participate, but everyone who I have met so far that did has told me that it was not only a waste of their money, but they are upset about it. One comment I heard was "you want to play that? give me 5 bucks and I'll kick you in the crotch... it'll save you some effort".
For anyone who wants to try this format out at home, here are your instructions. Give someone 5 dollars. Have them kick you in the crotch. The rules aren't quite the same, but the crotch kick could very well be more fun.
As for the rest of nats, Origins seems relatively unorganized with respect to pre-registration for events, but the people here are grade A. I am enjoying my time here dispite Mech Hunter, and the disorganized Origins Volunteers.
If any decision makers at WK want to know how the organization thing could be remedied, feel free to PM me. As a consultant, I have little tolerance for disorganized events, and I could point out a few areas that could easily be improved.
It is a single booster game. Trust me, you don't want to know the rules, but someone will probably post them at some point. They're really stupid.
I'm pretty excited about the nationals sealed rounds tomorrow. So far all the players we've met are really cool, so it should be fun. From what I've heard, there are 248 seats for tomorrow. I'm not expecting more than about 150 though.
Well, that's all I'm reporting for now from my kickass hotel room.
It sounds to me like this may be a substitute for Solaris 7 or something.
WizTopps could have really made MechWarrior successful by utilizing Solaris 7 or marketing the game better than they did instead of killing off all the mail in LE's and whittling down the campaigns like they did instead.
I wonder if they actually learn from thier mistakes or just go, "Oh well!" and move on to the next money making scheme?
The South Park technical name for Sarphus' game is 'roeshambo'.
I believe the game evolved from a Vulcan challenge ritual.
It is not to be confused with the only known Welsh martial art, 'echi-thump'. That involves running up behind someone, {preferably unawares} hitting them over the head with a blood sausage, then running away.

'Echi-thump' is actually a Black Country martial art. For those who don't know, the Black Country is an area of England located just to the north of Birmingham.
The 'Mech you pull from your booster is your "hunter." The infantry and vehicles everyone pulls from their boosters are the "prey."
The rules are actually a lot less complex than MWDA (only a page and a half).
It's no substitute for Solaris VII.
It's supposed to be a 30-minute, one booster, "quick play" game, possiby intended to introduce people to clix-game mechanics. (Right now you can't do ANYTHING with just one, or even two or three boosters. In contrast, that $10-$30 will get you a good card game like Dalmutti or Flux or Munchkin, a classic board game, any Game from Cheap #ss Games, or enough booster packs of any trading card game for two people to play sealed deck.)

Just hearing this makes me think that IT IS lame. Can't they think of better things to do? :p
Last year at GenCon Indianapolis Wizkids was really disorganized on the first day, but got much better. They had a really fantastic format with a single booster.
1. Buy a generic event ticket for $1.
2. Sign up for a booster event. Needed at 4 people.
3. Get one booster, open it and everyon plays with whats inside. Get to have all SE and a free for all.
4. When 2 players are eliminated, the remaining players start again WITHOUT repairing ANYTHING. It was a blast.
