This is my attempt to prove that Stormhammer heat is worse than Swordsworn. I write this during the actual findign of data and what not, so I admit here and now I may be wrong :)
I have gone through great pains(heat dial checking and number work) to come to this conclusion.
This test compares all Swordsworn and Stormhammer mechs from Death From Above and all the way to the 4 LEs in Falcon's Prey.
Part 1:
Lets start with the Stormhammer numbers, shall we?
Average yellow on heat dials:
Total yellows: 36
Total Mechs: 19
Average yellow on a heat dial: 1.89
The average Stormhammer mech has almost 2 yellows on a heat dial.
Now for reds:
Total Reds:15
Total Mechs: 19
Average Red on a heat dial: 1.27
One and a quarter reds per heat dial :)
And black:
Total Blacks:9
Total Mechs: 19
Average Black on a heat dial: 0.47
Only half a black on a mech, here.
Average colors: 3.16 on an average mech
Average top number(first click not counted):
Total number: -25
Total Mechs: 19
Average number on top: -1.32
Well, your average mech has 1.3 total negatives on it :)
Average middle number:
Total: -31
Total Mechs: 19
Average middle number: 1.63
Over one and a half total in the middle.
Average bottom number:
Total: -37
Total Mechs: 19
Average middle number: -1.95
This is the click with most triple strength myomer, and yet its still the worst. Almost a -2 total on speed.
Average numbers total: -4.89 negatives on an average mech.
ah, but you forgot two very pertinent bits of information, namely vent rating and total clicks of dial. I assert that SS have a MUCH lower average vent rating then SH and may also be slightly lower in average clicks of heat dial as well. These two stats are probably even more important to determining what is or is not a "Good" heat dial then negitive numbers and at least as important as colors. Another fact that is harder to quantify but just as important is the placement of colors. A red shutdown avoid on the last click of a heat dial is far less threatening then one two clicks back. And a string of yellow energy effects is worse then a string of heavily subtracted ammo explosions. As I said hard to quanitfy this factor but it is there. Perhaps a third stage of your analysis is in order. It was interesting reading your conclusions. I hope you still have enough interest in the topic left to explore my observations.
Another factor that wasn't considered was the fact that SS have more ammo explosions and for more damage. I would rather push a SH mech anyday than a SS.
There is yet another factor that has to be considered here: the number of clear clicks with no color. SS dials tend to get their color early, SH dials seem to have really bad dials at the higher clicks. I'd have to check the numbers to be sure this trend holds true, but that is certainly my impression.
Maybe I should have put that this isn't an accurate statistical position, but rather just a jest and something I did because I have far too much spare time? :p

lol, well, there always is that.
Two 'Mechs that do somewhat off-set the tables a little are Arturo Wolf and Viktor Hannan, however. They are two of the cleanest-running (heat-wise) 'Mechs in existance.
Another item that may like to be addressed that I don't *think* anyone else has mentioned thus-far is the average number of clicks in the heat-dials for each faction... would be interesting to know who shuts down first on average. :)
--Edit - scratch that last item, it's already been mentioned, lol.
Viktor & Arturo have no Restart Rolls - if Viktor shuts down, he's down for two turns. With his Vent of 1, Arturo Wolf is dead if the 'Mech shuts down.
Admittedly that is so, Andy - but Stumpy (mind if I call you that? lol) was just counting the colors on the dials - and Arturo has none, while Viktor only has one yellow, and one black. So that somewhat off-sets the count.

I think you calculated this stat backwards. There are fewer red effects than there are mechs, so the agerage must be less than 1. I believe the correct average is 0.79. If you figure this into your total calculations, you will probably find that SS, my favored faction btw, gets the short end of the heat dial.
