I've recently started playing games with 2 identical mechs, and found that my games have gotten a lot better.
I think the reason for this is that you don't have a SINGLE big target. You can also use 1 to block LOS to the second as you set up the second, then break and shoot.
I've always found that when I play 2 mechs, 1 big one small, I can never seem to get anything to work.
I'm just curious if anyone else has noticed this. By Denying your opponents a juicy target, he does not knw exactly what to do.
Personally I found that mechwarrior has turned into who has the elite pieces, over tactics. I find that its something like 70% unit build (uniques, LE and Elite pieces) and 30% tactics. I'm currently trying to reduce my relieance on Elite pieces, and learn more tactics. I know some pieces are necessary, an army of VV1 Rangers has no chance, but I'd like to know if its actually possible to win without using the elite pieces.
The problem is that most of the best tactics revolve around great figures. Tank drops need good transports and good tanks, VTOL swarms need good VTOLs, ATV or Trike squads, Arnis, LI Targe.....if you can name it, you need the good peices.
You can however build good armies around other good figures that are not so much marque figures. I've seen some tough armies that were with nothing special. I've seen two ROS Cougars played well, formations of decents tanks such as SC or Liao Fulcrums, SC Joust tanks. I've got an army with a SW ForestryMech MOD and a SW ForestryMech MOD-B that plays well agianst some armies.
It all depends on who you play against. If you are playing against players with power pieces, you're going to need some goo tactics and good figures, but even a decent army can beat a good army if things go your way. Just try to take the advantage away from your oponent. Find his strengths and weaknesses and exploit them.
I have played a SC Blackhawk with 2 SC Joust Tanks (thinking about switching to Fulcrums) but that was all green units. You have never seen such devestation as a Alpha Strike backed up by two tanks pulsing :noid: Instant destruction for just about everything. When there was only Dark Age, I killed Erin Johnston, Caden Senn, and Dereck Hasbani all the time with this tactic.
Running dual 'Mechs works. It's a proven fact. The most important thing when running dual 'Mechs is trying to lean toward 'Mechs with Evade or Jump Jets... 'Mechs that break away from infantry easily and can get up the field quickly.
Also, you don't have to run the exact same 'Mech, but you should try and run 'Mechs that compliment one another well... one good first strike 'Mech with one good fatty. One with high energy damage and one with high ballistic damage. A long ranger and a close ranger. You get the idea.
You should also bring a lot of base n' break. Hoverbikes, jump infantry, light hover vehicles... whatever. It keeps pressure off your 'Mechs as you set 'em up and gives them support when they get into trouble.
Trevor, I have run a very similar army, but I use a SC Shockwave instead of the Sun Cobra. They deal with the DF Donars very well, yes they do precious. I just use one less H-bike.
I love dual Armys. Yesterday i ran a Dual SC army of
Sun cobra
Arnis
2xCBA
Scorchers
Crow VTOL
and a SW j-37 (Due to SC lack of good repair and 3 cap transport.)
It did really well. i waded the Cobra in water while arnis softened up targets. the scorchers kept but guns off my mechs back and the crow did well in a harrasment role =) if you foing to play this game a dual strat is a great way to screw up your opponents game plan =)
okay, well it is, but hopefully those Sylph will roxors. I intend to get a lot of those bad boys if they do. I had such high hopes for Monic too. I don't think I will be buying too much FP.
