Ok Kids it's my turn to have a rant about something here...
Before you fluff warriors go crazy and complain about mechs class (light/medium/heavy/assault) being classified by points instead of tonnage, try to understand game balance. Imagine how hard it would have been to balance out the costs for all the added extras like pilot cards and gear...
Since there will be (as I understand it) different "generic" pilots for light mechs, than heavy mechs and etc, you can't all of a sudden say "this 97 point mech and this 150 point mech are both light because of their tonnage". Why? because the 20 point "light" pilot who does x, y and z will be ridiculously more valuable to the mech that, through SE and stats, is 150 than the pile of crud that's worht 97 points.
I'd rather have slightly unrealistic mech classes and a balanced, even game than a 100% history lesson. At the end of the day, this is a game, not fact. Game balance, especially the point-to-effectiveness ratio has been one of the biggest sore points I've read about. Fixing that is a giant step towards fixing the game.
Like I said, just having a rant in support of Wizkids who I think are doing well in the face of a lot of angry customers. And to all those who are quitting and think that wizkids sucks and you're over it? Hurry up and leave already, and stop your bloody nay-saying, cos I'm getting tired of it.
For that matter, we don't even know for certain that they _are_ using points fo the Mech Class Classification. For all we know, "Chu-I" is rated for both Light _and_ Medium 'Mechs, and we're all jumping to conclusions because we can't see the full pilot card, but we can see the words "Medium 'Mech" in the text box...
(note, we can't even see the letter in the Requirements box).
I'm not saying that this is the case. In all likelihood, Chu-I can only pilot Medium 'Mechs, and the Crimson Hawk has been classified as a Medium, but I figured I'd throw out an alternate possibility, and point out that people are (as usual) jumping to conclusions without all the information they _think_ they have.
@Freeptop
Yeah, I'm not sure either, was sort of thinking back to Solaris VII and what I'd seen people post, assumed something had been announced that I missed. Sorry if i got a bit narky then! Lets call it a pre-emptive rant.
In CBT i used for tonnage classification so this entire classification by points cost is crazy. I mean there is Ezekiel Crow whos Blade costs same as assault mech but its weight is 35 tons. So by its tonnage its light but by its cost its assault.
"But that still doesn't explain why a 30ton spider can take 2/3 the damage of a 100ton atlas."
Well, most infantry can, why not a light 'Mech?:)
I think one of the reasons WK goes by points in classifying units is because it would be too much for everyone to memorize each 'Mech and what it weighs and which weight class that would fall under.
WK could have printed a symbol on each 'Mech giving it's weight class but decided to stick to the points system. Besides, then you'd have namby-pambies arguing about their getting it wrong.
Don't forget that the units are going to include more information on their bases now including a letter indicating weight class. Read the quad mech article. Now they CAN define weight class independent of points. Doesn't mean they will, but they can.
I couldn't agree more with your last two paragraphs - eloquently
stated. ;)
Also, I finally got your package (the uniques you purchased from
me) off today via USPS Airmail. You should have it in 4 to 7 days.
Thanks, again, for your purchase! I hope you enjoy the pieces! :)

Actually, they've flat out said they will. See the first Quad article:

The only parts of the 'Mech base that are new are the gear slots and variant name. The variant name is basically the model number of that specific 'Mech. The final character indicates the weight class of the 'Mech. In this case, the Thunder Fox - TFX-A4-M is a medium Mech.
That stupid little quad trashcan piece of junk garbage had freaking better be inbetween 40 and 55 freaking tons or I am going to raise more cain than this stupid profanity filter can handle.
Yeap CBT set weight classes for a reason:) Whizkids needed to do that from day one. None of this Assault mechs moving at locust speeds or Infantry moving faster then an assualt mech. Still find it stupid that game "Balance" made it so BA could move at insane speeds. Thats what transports are supposed to be for.
Average speed of BA in CBT 2/3 average speed of a 100 ton assualt mech 3/5. Average speed of a Heavy mech 4/6. Weight classes make balancing things a lot easier of course half the designs made by WhizKids sucks so much ### in CBT that its not funny. The Templar is missing 13 tons of weapons. Sticking flamers on a Command Assault mech? Why the #### does everything have Autocannon 2s? Does the guy who writes the fluff text have a hard on for a long ranged #### damage weapon?
I mean sure stick 10 of em on a mech and you have the paper cut crit death machine, but 2 of em on a clan design what are you thinking.
