Just out of curiosity, I was trying to figure out if the unique mechs could be used with out a pilot card, and how they would be effected. I coudn't find anything specific saying you can't, so I assume you can use them pilotless, and you just treat them as mercenary units, and merc contracts would effect them like any other merc unit. Am I correct here?
The Mechs for all the faction leaders have the faction symbol on their bases. If you add a gunslinger that can pilot said mech they have to pay the recruitment cost. There is currently no game mechanic to REMOVE the faction symbol from the base of a unit.
And can you play the mech without the legendary pilot? Yes, but what's the point of that?

A true point, but Silent_Recoil was talking about uniques not just legendary mechs, and for GS mechs everything they said is correct. Also that green is rather rad to read on grey.
Yes, he is right about that when it comes to Gunslinger Mechs. My apologies, an argument I had this weekend was coloring how I read his question. Though, I still wonder if any of the unique Mechs are worth taking without a unique pilot of some sort?
And thanks! I find the green easier on the eyes with this grey background.
As a color defecient person, I find the use of colors other than white to be very hard on my eyes. I usually have to highlight the text so that I may read it.
