I moved to about a year and a half ago and there is no venue or players in my area. As I was starting to lose interest in the game anyway, I sold most of my pieces online.
With the release of AoD I have decided to get back into the game. My son is 8 years old and has already learned the game from the starter I picked up. I have also taught my Wife's Uncle how to play. And I can't wait until my case comes tomorrow. I think Wizkids has revitalised the game with AOD and has really made the game worth coming back to.
All fascinating, Cloudmoon, and while your comment is your own, totally acceptable opinion, why do you feel the need to express it without specifics or, better yet, on a thread that is not about people who came back to MW thanks to AoD, as this one is, but about what people actually think about AoD? :ermm: Just my humble suggestion ;)
Back to topic, I've seen a flock of returnees to the game since AoD released - both young and old. The club I run at school has had a major boost in numbers, back from just over 15 members to close on 30, and most of these have been players who lost interest and stopped turning up over the last year. :)
I had quit myself but, AoD brought me back with the new rules and the sweet pieces. Plus I like the fact that you can equip your mech how ya want now. I just think its a way better game now.
Our venue has started to run CBT games on the same day as the MW tournaments. They had six players last Saturday, all prior MW players. We had four. All of the CBT players wandered over to our tables and watched as we played with the AoD rules and pieces. Everyone of them commented that if the AoD pieces and rules had been used while they were playing, they would never have left. When I asked why they are not coming back, they all said that it was too expensive to get back into the game.
I would like to see more people get back into MW. Welcome back trueborn!
TenExs,
I find it interesting that you said the reason the CBT players are not coming back to MW is the fact that it is too expensive. I thought that is why they went to retirement, to give new players a break. I'm just glad to see that retirement is not working in some areas.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that most of the people who got out of MW and switched to CBT are people who were original CBT players. I'm a player who never played CBT and I think the rules were just fine the way they were. I think WK just tried to make a new appeal to CBT players and all the complaining and changed the rules to what they are now. I know that everyone says this game is BattleTech, but I beg to differ.
I'm actually a player from a camp that I've yet to hear much talk about; the camp that is less interested in the game with the release of AoD. I've spent a ton of bank on the game and invested countless hours learning stategy and now I have to start all over and I'm not sure that is fair, not even to mention that almost half of my collection is not legal in most events. I'm just glad the people at WizKids have stopped making new games and are focusing on making their games stronger, but I don't like the fact they revamped half the rules and they did the same to Mage Knight and that game is pretty much dead in my area.
Just about everyone at my primary venue started as a BattleTech player, including my 14-year old son. The venue has supported CBT games for years.
The claim that retirement makes it easier for new people to get into game is partly correct. A new player can buy a couple of boosters, get about 500 points of MW figures, and not have to face my 350,000 points of DA, FFE, DFA, LI, CA, FP, and AoD pieces. He only has to contend with my 150,000 points of tournament legal pieces from LI, CA, FP, and AoD. Imagine his relief.
All of our prior-MW players are hard-core players. They are not going to buy a couple of boosters to play. They are going to buy a case and expect to use that case until they choose to buy another. They spent $$$$ when the game first came out and do not want to have to spend the money again just to play. The comment that I hear from everyone of them is, "I bought this BattleTech figure X (insert 1 to 10) years ago and can still use it in formal tournaments".
It is not that they do not want to play, they just chose to spend their money elsewhere and cannot play in the sanctioned MW tournaments. I would love to get these guys back because they are good gamers and really ramp-up the level of competition.
Bottom line -- there are a lot of good games to play.
Pre AoD I had one player who consistantly showed up and some kids that just started playing the game that would show up periodically. If we were lucky I would get 3 players for an event. Post AoD I expect to average 6 players a night because some of my old timers have come back. The rules to me in AoD just feel more logical and "user friendly" They are intuitive and in a weird way that has helped the game be more competitive.
Example, the old players that came back I think adapted to the new rules much more fluidly than they ever did to the old rules. Even if they came back under the old rules it would take some time for their tactics to get back up to par, longer than it has taken under the new rules.
I am a big AoD fan and so far have only found one rule that actually bugs me and it is no where near the level of annoyance that was provided by the old basing and charging rules.
most of the reason I will not come back is as Tenexs said, cost. I pretty much knew that I should not get involved in a "collectable" game, but this was (to me) the new Battletech, and that is the reason I got into MWDA in the first place. I knew going in that I would need to spend lots of money just to compete (after all, in a "collectable" game like this, those with the most money can buy a win. can I justify this, sure I can, who will win a game 99 out of 100 times when one person has only the units from his starter and a person who can choose his units from a case or two? just the reason WKTS wanted to start the whole system over, so new players have a chance, well now the older players do not have a chance unless they want to purchase massive amounts of new units.), I just never thought I would have to start over from scratch, now, if I want to play competitively, i have to just that. well I can't afford to do it again. as the old saying goes "fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame, shame on me".
I own a 15 year old car (I am using my car as an example, because with what I spent on MWDA I could have purchased another one with ease. just how stupid am I? pretty dang stupid now that I look back at it, knowing what I know now. man, when I think about how much I have blown on MWDA), not because I want to, but because I can't afford a new one. while it will not win all of the races it could, it can still compete. I am not forced to purchase a new vehicle just to drive on the road. I mean think of it this way, the PTB decide that I can not drive my car on the road because it just aint pretty anymore, but I dont need to purchase a new one because I can drive my car all I want on my property, just not on the road. well, being that I need my car to go to far away places, I will be forced to purchase a pretty car in order to get there. I look at AoD the same way, but luckily I do not need to play AoD, so WKTs will not get another cent of my money, because I can play with the toys I have now and have no need to buy any more ever again (I would have continued to purchase, if I was not forced to to stay competitive) I have tons of MWDA if anyone wants to come over and play. :nervous:
I will be absolutly honest, from what I have seen from AoD it is a better game than MWDA ever was, heck, it is a lot better, but I am an old man on a fixed income, and I shot my load on MWDA, and I just can't do it again. maybe when the next retirement, or the one after that (if it lasts that long) happens I will be able to afford to start again. :ermm:
I think what honks me off the most is WKTs could have started MWDA with the AoD rules and I would at least been stuck with a better game.
Driving on the average road doesn't get you any sort of reward, so it would be more accurate to label casual play as 'road driving'. If you wanted to extend it, 'road driving' could also cover venue and unrestricted play, neither of which restricts you from using older units.
Tournament play is more like competitive racing. In both you are going to be restricted by the people running the race.
Of course, then you have some states, like the one I'm in, which requires annual inspection for your car. If your car doesn't meet minimum safety and emissions guidelines, then you either have to pay to bring it up to spec or buy a new car. Either way, I'm spending money every year in upkeep to keep my car running and 'current'. So I guess that matches up with tournament play - I've got to keep current if I want to compete, or stay on the public roads.
Just play in the unrestricted games and then not only are you not wasting more money on this game you are also not wasting more time. :-) I agree with much of what you said there hangman. I also don't agree that retirement makes it easier on new players. Seems to me that they will have to invest money regardless to be competitive and most of the new units are much better than the old ones.
Our venue saw a revival with AoD. We had 2 of our 6 regular players who had basically quit come back simply because they liked the AoD rules. 4 gets old because you're always playing the same players. 6 makes for a good 3 round tourny.
