August 18, 2005 (SEATTLE) — WizKids Inc., creator of the runaway hit games HeroClix® and Pirates of the Spanish Main™, announced today its agreement with Universal Studios Consumer Products Group to develop a collectable card game (CCG) based on the new SCI FI Channel Battlestar Galactica series.
“We couldn’t be happier to add our tradition of innovative gaming to one of the hottest science fiction properties available,” said Mike Samora, vice president of Sales and Marketing at WizKids®. “The success of the television show has introduced a new generation to the Battlestar Galactica story, and a game is the natural expansion of that introduction.” The game, slated for release in early 2006, features characters, ships and familiar scenes from the miniseries and television show on the SCI FI Channel.
Game play will mirror the intrigue of the television show: Players won’t know whom to trust, who the Cylon agents are or where the next attack will come from! Players will battle for ownership of resources and influence in order to control the fleet.
The Battlestar Galactica CCG will be supported by the WizKids Approved Play program.
ABOUT BATTLESTAR GALACTICA:Inspired by the classic series, this extraordinary story was re-imagined by the SCI FI Channel and NBC Universal Television Studio in December of 2003 in the form of a 4-hour miniseries event. Capturing a new generation of fans, Battlestar Galactica became the most-watched cable miniseries of the year and led SCI FI to continue the saga through a one-hour weekly series. Redefining the space opera with its gritty realism, the new Galactica, executive produced by Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, has distinguished itself by the intensity and present day relevance of its stories and the command performances of its ensemble cast. Now one of television's most critically-lauded shows, Battlestar Galactica is currently in its second original season, airing on SCI FI Channel every Friday night at 10pm ET/PT.

Mmm. Do they want an honest opinion? If not, too bad. I hope they dont draw too much offense from an honest opinion.
The TV Miniseries was quite good. True enough to the old series to have a tie-in, modern enough to keep interest.
Sci-Fi did well to set themselves up on the next channel over from the History Channel. I think of the 10-channel spread as the "geek network" personally... not that I've anything against geeks, being one myself. It does very well for a selection of TV channels.
That said... it was a very good miniseries. And a good continuation series. And better TV than most manage these days. But frankly, I dont think it'll make all that much money for them as a CCG. The competition for tabletop games is simply too fierce these days, made only the more ferocious by the hegemony of d20, Magic, etc.
It's a good idea for a sidemarket CCG, particularly if the gameplay was designed by a particularly clever gnome wizard. But unless the gameplay is mega-badassed and designed by a gnome that somehow managed to not get hired by WotC, I dont see it as anything but a sideline.
Thing is, lately, Wizkids seems to be doing fairly well with sideline games. Dont invest too much money and you've got the potential for an easy few snathced bucks. Thing is, in the long term, it's just so bloody hard to compete with WotC. Say whatever bad about them you will but WotC seems to somehow always manage to be very good at making fun games. And fun is what it's all about in this industry.
Eh. Enough rambling. Dont take offense, Wizkids, I'm trying to help you. :)
Dont forsee buying any BG packs myself, to be honest. And I'm told that I tend to think like your average gamer. *shrug*
This is a franchise (if you will) that would have LOVED a clix based game built around it. They could have taken the game so darn far it wouldnt be funny!
(A warship clix game would be fan #### tastic - but Im guessing would take away too much from Rocket Man)
Either that or they are secretly bringin out AeroTech!!!! =D
Aerotech/Battlespace clix - CMG based in space using warships and squadrons of fighters
Battleforce - CSG allowing large-scale movements of troops. Needs to mesh with MW:AoD.
In other words, expand on the formulae they have and target an already warmed and loyal audience.
If MW:AoD had more "hang-off" franchises we wouldn't lose so many players. CCG players could have a change yet remain in the franchise. Wargamers could go off and play Naval battles or large-scale strategy and remain in the franchise.
This game is all well and good but how many dead CCGs are there related to TV franchises? Who plays the Buffy CCG? Or the Beverly Hills 90210 CCG?
For the long term, I truthfully doubt this product will "have legs". It should be profitable in the short term however, and with any luck, may even prove to be popular enough to branch out into a miniature game.
Right now, the game seems to be described as too much like "Rocket Men" for my taste.
What the gaming world needs though, is a true successor to "Star Fleet Battles". I would love to see clix-based starships battling it out.
What I would ultimately want to see from a BSG game is:
Starter kit with miniature Battlestar, Vipers, and Raptors
Another starter kit with a Base Star and Cylon Raiders
"Booster" card packs with random pilots, gear, and missons.
Basically, just make the cards collectable. But keep the miniatures.
Good luck with this CCG. I doubt that I will get involved.
I like the current Battlestar Galactica series, though I wonder about its staying power. Cost for the series must be pretty high and it can be quickly replaced with a reality-based show with Richard Hatch starring in "So you want to be a Cylon."
A CCG? If I had guessed that they were going to branch in to this universe I would have expected them to make a clix out of it. And THAT might have actually been interesting. But a CCG? Na ... no thanks. I suppose the upside to it is that you could have a lot of it and still only take up a binder or so (i.e. not take up much space) ... unlike the dozen or so large tackleboxes I have downstairs for MW.
Hey all! As a kid, I loved the old 1970's TV show. I was fortunately able to watch the 4 hour 'event' on the sci-fi channel (while I still had cable) and I love this one even more. Actually, it's nice that they tied the classic TV show to this new series (if you watch the pilot, you can see the old cylon fighters and centurions being studied in some book someone was reading). Anyways, I wish they would do a CMG of this instead of a CCG. I'm going to wait and see what the gameplay is like before I buy any. As for Aerospace/Warship wars...I'm all over that :) . I've been told that aerospace fighters move too fast to be any good on a MW battlefield, so why not move them into space. I bet there could be some REALLY cool models made of some of the stuff out there. Anyways, I hope to get my hands on a DVD of season 1 of BG (if it's out there).
Warhawk out.
My only concern is how they are going to compete with the money tours of Magic and Vs. Both of those games have a big turnout at cons and what not with people looking for a shot at the big money. I they are going for the "fun" crowd, I don't see how they can generate enough interest without some serious tie-ins to the show.
