First of all, this is not a nerf call, please don't take it that way. I like PCs and think they are a good addition to the game, just that certain times you really wish certain ones were not laid down.
Ok, now to the actual thread. Of late there have been some PCs that can get on your nerves, and was just wanting to know personal experiences with that one PC that irks you when its laid down.
For me, its Caverns right now. The reason is because of my army builds. They tend to center around heavy armor, with infantry and light/medium mech support, with a good percentage of VTOLs thrown in, the round-out peice is usually an artillery peice to use as counter-battery (IE, either give the other guy something to shoot at other than the unit he REALLY hit, or if the other guy has no artillery, use it to keep that mech movin' baby!). Well, Caverns generally a lot of times nullifies about 100, 120 points of my army (out of our standard 600) depending on how many VTOLs I play. The Artillery usually becomes just a really week tank that sits back and does nothing, and the 'no cruise' clause basically screws over the normal usage I have for VTOLs.
What are some PCs that cause you to think 'aww ####' when they are laid down?
well basicly caverns is another motivator to lay off on artillery , since firepower we barely see people playing artillery. though i am sure we ll see it return in some alternate form next year.
then again there s always perfect day to counter the card .
for a CNC player a card like Dust Storm is a big pain in the ###, all ranges reduced to 8" so far i havent been faced an army playing with it but i see it as one of the PCs i hate to play against.
'Barrens' is my most-hated PC to play against. Whether it's blocking, hindering, or water, I can generally find a use for a piece of terrain. Playing on a blank board is just boring.
This didn't happen to me but in one tournament I played at a kid fieled:
1 Merc Zahn
1 RoTS Enyo
The rest of his 600pt army consisted of ATV's. He had 2 SH, 9 HK, and 28 CNC and HD ATV's. It was pretty funny seeing that army. Well in 1 round his opponent played Caustic Atmosphere. He had played his Perfect Day against me in the first round. It was pretty neat seeing his army self-destruct when caustic was rolled just about every round.
I do seem to always get the absolutely worst Planetary Condition card played against me. As AlexStBlair knows. mind you I can generally adapt to the situation if I stop and remember a few anger management techniques. Granted we usually roll for random PCs...not my idea...but whatever. I'm just not a big fan of PCs....I've yet to learn to really play them. One of my shortcomings...
For me its Urban. I play against alot of JF and certain other relevant army types. It makes the board a restrictive 'Mountain Range'. It is also hard to counter because it starts with a 'u'. Mostly I think its how OFTEN I see Urban that bothers me.
Second would be Perfect Day. Fairly or not, I'm concidered one of the harder players to beat, and as such, opponents seem to think my PC choice is meant to destroy their army or make mine uber. So I see a fair bit of Perfect Day too. This annoys me because I really like the variety PCs provide, and like to try lots of different ones.
RANDOM PCs is awesome, IMHO. You really have to be flexible and adaptable and every game is different. I can't control the weather, why should my toy army be able to?
So I think we should be fair, and just FAQ all PCs. Suggested rules "DarkRevenant cancels out all PCS that could potentially frustrate him. Additional note: DarkRevenant's PC is whatever he desires it to be, even if the PC does not exist."
Absolutely, 100% it's Perfect Day. The "I don't want to play with PCs, so you can't either" card. It's easy, it's almost brainless and in any lengthy tournament every player will carry it.
Now, I don't have a problem with the cancel card concept. However, I liked the way Mage Knight handled it better. Initially, they had two classes of "PC" cards - Terrain and Weather. They also had two cancel cards, one for each variation.
There was thought about what you wanted to cancel. You worried about "Storm Gale" (which disallows ranged combat actions), you'll play "Clear Skies" if you think your opponent will play it. Worried about Badlands (removes terrain and inflicts 1 click of pushing damage to everyone on the battlefield), then play "Open Terrain."
I always like the variety of PC's and haven't been really effected by any. Heck I am a huge CNC fan and love when people bring in arty heavy armies, cause even with the range restriction I'll play dust storm just to irk them off more, and since I love the randomeness of the SC longtom dust stormm never really bothered me, matter of fact it made the round more hilarious. Now I'm getting into RD and I have to to say I haven't had the option to find out what my biggest probelm will be yet. I just wish so many cards didn't cancel each other out.
Still laughing from the "We should FAQ YOU!" comment. But I'm a JF player and Dust Storm obviously used to upset me. Though with the great new peices I've quit concentrating on DFA and more on constructive playing. Its allowed me to drift away from fear of DS and on to other things. I like Solar Flare a lot when it works. Nightfall is always a favorite too, as JF range is usually pretty bad.
