Reed Richards has Doom in his pocket. Dimension that is. We discover that Reed felt Doom was too dangerous to leave in hell, so he trapped him in a pocket universe. Way to go Mister Fanatastic. He decides to sacrifice himself to jail Doom forever, but his teamates, not knowing what's going on break the seal.
Now Doom has possesed Susan and has killed like five guys already. Man, I could see what was coming, and my heart still skipped a beat.
That's good writing. When a writer puts his cards on the table and still scares the hell out of you, he's done his job.
FANTASTIC FOUR is the best team book Marvel puts out. No joke. Mark Waid is staying, and things are only going to get even better from here.
I think Waid has turned this book around, for me especially. I'm glad Weringo's going to be back on the book soon. His art kicks ###!
Personally, I like what they've done to Doom, the story and pacing is great. I'm glad that it didn't just end with Doom going to Hell. Keep the snowball rollin...
I think Weiringo's version of Thing is too cuddly, but I like the rest of it.
What has been most important in this run is the restoration of Richards as leader. Many writers would just have Reed give instructions ad focus the whole issue on the others carrying them out. Under Waid, Mister Fantastic is a force to be reckoned with. His power is really his brain.
Usually Darius and I share similar opinions, but man! do I love this book. Porter used to be a better artist though. I remember his Ray and have seen some JLA. I think he may have had to rush under the gun to get this out on time though.
Hey does anybody know what's coming after A.A.? In Marvel previews it says the Fantastic THREE (YES THREE) will be going somewhere they've all heard of, but have never dreamt to going to! I think they go to heaven or hell or something, but it'll be hard for them not to get to religiouse. The one being left out will iether be Reed or Sue. Sue might because of her bieng taken over by doom, or reed because he's watching doom in his "Pocket". I think it'll be sue, since it's still a group without her, plus reed couldn't quit or else they'de never get there!
Waid's an amazing writer and I can't say enough good about 'Ringo's art. As for who's gonna be the FF member left out for a while, my vote, b/c of the story, is Sue. (Reed left for a while several years back the last time it became F3.) However, it would not surprise me if I'm completely wrong and they take out Jonny to see if that can be used to give fresh breath and life to his solo book. (Does anyone know if that's cancelled or getting cancelled?)
Human Torch is on tap until issue twelve for sure. After that, I wouldn't bet on it. Sales have been in the toilet.
The initial story was OK but three issues too long. The new story looks good, but issues have also been extremely late. I normally hate Anime/Manga art, but this guy's art has a heart and emotion missing from most others. I like it in spite of myself.
I buy Human Torch because I support The Four, but aside from occasional spotlights, fear Johnny may not be strong enough to be a central character. For the book to succeed would mean letting Torch progress instead of each writer ignoring his growth from previous stories. John Byrne and Chris Claremont gave Johnny a real voice, but other writers (even Waid) seem to think it is still 1970 where Johnny is concerned.
If given the chance, Karl Kessel is the man to write this book (his Superboy was awesome), but Marvel usually only gives twelve issues for a book to find an audience. With more books out now than since the nineties fallout, it's harder than ever for a book to get seen.
But props to Marvel for putting their muscle behind The Four this year and the one upcoming. The FF have taken a beating for being old fashioned heroes the last twenty years. But the pendulum swings back from "X" to "4".
