MW 2? thats pretty old. Great game for it's time. Are you talking about Mechcommander 2 the RTS? or mechwarrior2 the simulator from 1994?
Ya both are solid IMHO, but MW II....mannn SNIFF.....SNIFFF.....
that was my FIRST OFFICIAL taste of the Mechwarrior (then BattleTech in print) universe!! it is the reason I wanted to play Jade Falcon...at first!!!
I think it is a pretty fun game, however it IS dated graphically, and gameplay wise, also, there has been some issue with my getting it to even boot up outside of win95 (my present copy is the "gold" edition optimized for 95....go figure) so if I want to fiddle enough to get it AND my ANCIENT logitech wingman extreme to BOTH work at once, it is still pretty fun! The challenge is fairly tough, and you can order your wingmates around to a degree. the missions were fairly varied, and the AI while no brainchild (come on, it WAS the 90's) could put of a tough fight. the campaign mode really needs to be copied by some publisher ver batim, SUPER fun and fairly engrossing too boot.
It has all the trappings and the game features are pretty kewl I would absolutely LOVE to see the same options in a newer engine! Trials of all sorts are there, as are the missions, and the book with mine is WAYY cool for stats all the included units (WITH CLAN NAMES..hehehe) heat management, target acquision, range finding, ammo dumping, its all there, including ejecting!!
so if it is dirt cheap, and you are not intimidated by compatibility mode (or better yet have an old computer actually RUNNING 95-or 98) then I would say go for it! oh and have a joystick WITH progammable buttons too, it is a MUST!
I heard there was a fix for XP based machines and honestly I never looked it up, so there may be a fix out there that works wonderfully in XP if you hear of one let me know, I would love to be able to just boot the thing up and play without having to "raise the hood" so to speak! Happy hunting!! :knockedou
yes, Blanner, i was talking about the 94 MechWarrior 2. i already have mechcommander 2. pretty fun game.

thanks for the input, bigtop. i found a place where i can get it for not as much money as some other places ask, and i was wondering if it was good or not.
mechwarrior 2 was the ultimate game in its time....here are the ratings compared to the other mech pc games IMHO
storyline: pretty great. it made you feel like you were there, wanting to wipe ou clan wolf or just pretty much surviving the falcons attack. also, game play is focused more on the clan story, with you getting points for each mission you finish and getting bonus points if you used a mech with weight lower than recommended or you not using lancemates (think suicide heheh) the more points you get, the better your chance of advancing rank.
game play: is a whole lot harder compared to mech 3 and 4. u can't repair ur mechs in the middle of a battle and you have less ammo per ton. basically its put a lot or armor, get as much pulse thingies or even just regular energy weapons and blast ur opponent to smithereens. Ballistics and missiles wil also work but you run the risk of using up all ammo before you finish ur mission. there is also no salvage option (mw3 and mw4), you get to use anything that the clan has
graphics: well, it sent the benchmark for its time. don't expect much hyperrealism. you will see a lot of polygons..big bad polygons. movies are kinda ok. enhanced imaging sucks tho...all u get is wire drawings of ur surroundings..pretty kewl effect in its time tho
sounds: among the best operatic themes there is!! i still listen to the music tracks. the sound effects might not be that good compared to todays standards but it is quite good.
playability: i totally recommend this. gives you a great perspective of not only the refusal war between wolf and jade falcon but battletech history as well. if you love to read, you will probably spend hours reading the archives. as for finding other players to play against...meh, haven't found a server which hosts one.Controls are easy, finishing the mission though is quite hard at times.
and finally compatibility: i can't get it to run on my xp!!! same with mech 3!! (insert all kinds of curses here)!!! but if you have windows 95 or maybe even 98, i am 90% sure you can get it running.
1 more thing...if you can't get the latest update of mw2, don't put anything in ur right arm, it is usually the first arm to go flying.
forgot to add...you can go critical if you don't manage your heat levels...no coolant flush here...i can still remember them sounds...heat level critical, shutdown overriden, heat level critical, ammo explosion detected hehehe
I was having the same compatibility problems with Mechwarrior 3 and Windows XP. The solution is so simple that sometimes I still want to bang my head against the table.
Before you even run the installation of any older Mechwarrior game, go to the actual setup.exe and then right click and select properties. Then go to Compatibilty and select Windows 98 or 95. Then install it, it is that easy and it is all thanks to FrostyWolf359 that came up with such an easy solution.
Enjoy it. Mechwarrior 3 rocks when compared to 4. I still don't get how they went from 3 to 4. I think we can blame Microsoft for that. I love my little Thor filled to the brim with large lasers and LBX 2's or 5's. :devious:
I actually tried to get my Mechwarrior 2 to work just yesterday... but I think since I have the ATI 3D Rage edition that came free with my Windows 95 comp it won't work on anything without ATI 3D Rage
which sucks because I never actually got to beat that thing (because of the little thing that kept you from continuing on if you had infinite ammo, no heat, or invincibility on... and I was so young I couldn't figure that out... so I had infinite ammo on all the time >.>)
thank you all for all of your useful input. i have decided to buy the game, as i have found a seller offering MW2, MW2: Mercs, and MW2: Ghost Bear's Legacy all for under 10$ and everything i have heard of this game sounds pretty good. thanks, guys.
another thing about MW2 it was the first game (and probably the only one) where "circle straif" was used and dominated. You could take anything down straifing or locking on with missles from max distance before they activated. It as the introduction of new AI ,but still not he best.:p
Played it and finished it. It was a good game. It was what got me into the mechwarrior universe. bought number mechwarrior 3 and enjoyed that as well. :)
Hard game since I couldn't go 1-on-1 against com. Had to do the "shoot from hill" stragety. :p
