Think about how good pierce is with some of the better piercers such as Thunder Golem and Amazon Huntress. Pierce is pretty much guarateed damage with these two against just about any figure, especially in formations. i have looked at most of the threads about armies and have seen very few that use pierce.
Tell me what you think and if you have any armies that us pierce.
The Shaman sit right behind the BPR formation, and that huntress pretty much garunteers a 5 click attack. The Reaver protects the flanks and MBs people throughblocking terrain
Agreed, Shadowdeth, pierce is only worth while when you have a reason to get rid of those defense ability i.e. you need to get rid of toughness/invulnerability in order to ram, but even then it's only being used half the time.
But still the Thunder Golem and Amazon untress are good even if pierce isn't needed. And Battle Armor is the most common ability there is. You are most likely to fight a battle against someone useing one of the three abilities even though invulnerability isn't widely used.
Amazon Huntress is not worth her weight in anything. As has been said, pierce is helpful but not useful at all the time. It is not a game breaking ability. People don't have to change their entire strategy if they see a pierce figure. The reason why I am afraid of the Thunder Golem is his 14" range and his 4 damage and high attack. It has little to do with whether he has a red circle on that 4 or not.
I rank pierce as one of the useless SA, above aquatic but around Magic Freeze.
Instead of 3 clicks of pierce I would have rather have one of the following on a fig-
+1 attack
+1 damage
F/L
(and there are more)
What is pierce good against?----INV? Yeah right. Only a handful of figs have that ability. And the figs are pretty easy to take down even without Pierce. Though the tormented soul is the only fig with INV that I would worry over.
BA-the figs with BA, that see play are going to be in your face before you can fire a shot or they run shades.
Toughness- I would rather have another +1 to damage than pierce.
As for the huntress and thunder golem.... They both get 2 thumbs down from me.
I'd have to say that pierce is probably the most underused useful ability, although i don't think its underpriced. Its like a security SA, in case you are going up against something with invuln, which you dont see to much in a 200. when you get to conquest, pierce is a monster, but in a simple 200, its definitley a situational ability like shadowdeth said. its like an insurance in case you come up against an army thats built around toughness.
The amazon huntress in my opinion is incredibly overpriced. For 73 points, you get a glass jaw and pierce for 3 damage. Your opponent gives it 4 damage, and all of a sudden, you just got the royal smack down, and that thing just about took up half your army. The thunder golem, on the other hand, is a monster. That thing takes down things twice its point value, but i really dont think pierce has a lot to do with its strength.
These are all understandable and legitimate points, but I'm not saying it has to be used often, I'm just saying that especially (specifically) with the Thunder Golem pierce is deadly. Even more so if you get some DM's or ESA's.:p :p :p :p :p
