I am a casual MK player who happens to have horrible luck. When I buy three boosters at the local comic store, I always get ripped off (Centaur Medic was the best figure I got in one pack). Then my friend buys two and gets a unique figure in both of them. So I was wondering: are unique figures vital in order to do well in a game of MK?
no not if u make the right armiy. Some of the best armies dont have any uniques. Look around the realms most armies dont have uniques in low point battles. They are quite expensive so I guess it depends.
no they are not a must. Uniques are often thrown into armies by newer players just because they own them (i'm talking about tournament armies, in casual play you can do what you want)....
You should really only use the unique if you think you can support it adequatley, and if you think it gives you an advantage that's worth the cost of the figure.
Nope, uniques are not necessary. In a recent 200 pt army game i played i beat my opponent with no uniques, while her had his gate lord and supporters. I kneecapped his support, making him push on occasion with his gate lord, then i finally killed it.
Uniques are ok to have, but not a neccessity, strategy is the name of the game. The occasional good dice roll doesn't hurt either ;)
I view a unique just like any other troop when constructing an army. It's easy to make an effective army without a unique, it's also easy to make an effective army with a unique.
It is hard to make an effective army without having spent enough money on the game that you will have a whole bunch of uniques anyway..
Many of the archetype armies (ML/Ram, Swarm, Swarm/Charge, F&P, others) can be built without uniques. I can't remember ever placing in a tournament with a unique in an army (and I've placed in many tournies..).
And if you really need a unique, buy a Dungeons booster - a unique in every one! ;)
Ex is right, you need unqiues. Especially the big fatties. You know the ones that are at least 120 points, only uniques are that expensive. these 60-some point uniques are unique, there are lots of figures at that cost.
umm...no. You dont need them they might be fu in casual games, but arent needed. Most of the decent ones are low in point cost. Think about it, if you have a figure that is 50% of your army, you arent going to have very many attack options. Possibly resulting in pushing and overall action trouble.
They are not necessary, but some of them are fun to play with. As experienced players have already stated, a good player can build a competitive army without them, and be sucessful.
I like to play Uniques in large battles, and casual games. That's when I usually play figures not considered competitive, either because they are too expensive in points or just not good enough.
It really depends on how you like to play the game and how much money you intend to spend.
Not necessary, AND with the upcoming Minions expansion, there will be a new non-unique figure that has command--up till now a unique-only ability, and an ability which may occasionally be able to change the tide or outcome of a game. Whether or not Command is really that important, I'm just throwing into the mix that now every ability can be covered without needing a unique...
(I COULD be wrong on that last statement, but I'm pretty sure I'm not...Sneak Attack?)
Like others have said uniques are not necessary but I like to use them even in competetive play, probably because I play alot of the times for fun then to win but that doesn't mean I end up losing. Uniques maybe helpful but are not necessary and not all uniques are expensive, the Chaos Mage isn't and he is fun to use.
I'm glad to know that you asked this question at such a young stage in your MK Carreer ;). I believe we were all uder this impression when we got into MK as well, (actually, if you didn't have a Magus when I started to play MK, you were at a disadvantage, but that's beyond the fact :D).
The answer to your question is no. Vital figures in this game would be "cost-efficient" and "under-costed" figures so to speak, whether they be unique or non-unique.
