Well I finally got 5 ***Utem Guardsmen, and made an army with them. It's all melee, which is cool, because I like to use melee instead of ranged figures. Here it is:
The shades use their quickness to go a little ahead of the 2 formations, and then ase ranged figures so the formations can move up and base without being shot.
Also, I have a question, one of my Utems says that he's a ***, and has a ***'s stats, and is painted like a ***, but it says that he's 14 points. I know that this is a misprint, but I want to know if I can use him at 13 points, even though he's supposed to be 14 points?
Pretty bread-and-butter AG melee here. Utems and Blade Golems. It sounds like it would do okay against some armies, but even with the shades, it would not fare well against super long-range figs/armies. In my AG melee army, I use a technomancer to provide a double threat. I can ML a fig 10" only, thus freeing it to attack twice on two consecutive turns and essentially increasing its speed by 2, or I can move and then fling the fig, making it a threat at 18". I have been very successful with this method.
The old Reno army rears it's head again. Back in the day this army was unstopable. Now it can't find enough terrain to hide behind to actually get to it's target intact.
Yeah, I would consider adding a Technomancer or two. ML is really the Atlantean way to move at high speed. I would fling Utems, and follow up with the Golem formation for cleanup, or else fling the Golems, and follow up with Utems. Either way you will improve the mobility of your army. Technomancers are useful for the occasional F/L too...
This is the standard AG melee. I would add a ranged monster to this. Pure Swarms will not work very well with the introductikon of new figs. U need to add a twist like ram, charge, Big figure etc.
I agree with Magewarrior. A strong ranged fig would be a fantastic addition to this army. I use a Scorpem Gunner in my AG melee army, which is complemented perfectly by the technomancer. Yo-yo capabilities, I've found, fill the weakness of a pure melee army by outranging almost every fig out there. That includes the Storm Golem and Thunder Golem. (14" vs. 15")
Speaking of Stormy/Thunder Golem, I do not think even for a second that a Stormy would "blow the army away." A Regal won't even fit into the 200 points that this army is, so I won't even address him. What you did matai is you looked at the all melee army that moves 8" tops, and then you thought because Stormy has 14" range, that he will win automatically. The problem with him is that he won't have enough actions to deal with all the figs in this army. He has a couple choices. a) shoot one fig at a time, for 4 damage or more. Then he has to either push or wait a turn, which will allow the advancing formations time to either rest themselves or base him, making any healing null and making his range a non-factor. b) shoot up to three of the units for one damage each. If it is the Blade Golems, they won't be hurt badly at all. If it's the Utems, it will do some damage but will still allow them to advance and swarm him while the Blade Golems then do the same.
I myself have beaten a Storm Golem with an army very similar to this one. I took some shots at him with my Scorpem Gunner but was unable to hit him due to battle armor. Then, I flung a Blade Golem at him and he missed hitting him, and after that, it was all over.
Just because the army is all melee doesn't mean that it will get "blown away" by anything with range. Use your head.
Even something simple like the addition of a Gunner or two mixed in with the Melee formations would add another threat to the army. Your still going to take forever to get into base and have some major troubles with the big flying baddies but at least you'll have some range so they can't just sit back and wait for you to get close.
Whatever you do, keep on with the Utems. They are just plain fun. I will only play AG when it's melee - ranged is to boring for my tastes. So, like, add a techno or something, or even a war hatchetkrugg or something, but keep dem cheap utems!
