hey, im new to mage knight, and wanted to know what's a good army for someone just starting out. I just wanted some help, and didnt know where else to put this.
Well, it depends a lot on what units you have. If you are just starting out, I would assume you don't have a large base of units to choose from. Just read around on the boards, and look in battle formations under some armies and you can see what some good nons and uniques are. People debate a lot on what nons are good so I'm not going to put up a list or anything and have to debate a bunch of people. :p
Put up a list of your favorite figs that you have, people will come up with ideas as to what to add to them or what to play, or how to play those figs.
As mrdbeau said, check around the forums. I also will not post figures but I will post some ideas for you to consider.
1.) MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL!!! Take into consideration what you like. This is important to enjoyment more than winning. I love GOLEMS. This started for me in AD&D. It continued into Battle Tech (the love of deadly constructs) and then into Battlebots. I also love DRAGONS. Always have, always will. Think about what you like, or love.
2.) MOBILITY - is VERY important for battles. Mobility has played a VITAL role in all battles thoughout the history of the world (real and gaming).
3.) Consider playtesting against your self. Find out what you like to use and what you don't, what works for your style and what doesn't.
4.) ARTILLERY - Not a must, but good for softening the opposition for the foot soldiers.
This all goes together... with #1.)
5a.) Fun, fun, fun. Remember, its a game.
5b.) Enjoy yourself. It feels good to win, but sometimes, its better to lose.
5c.) Be polite. They may have to earn your respect, but you will earn theirs, only if your pleasent.
i think
*** bone golem
***fell reaper
*** battle queen
**specter (well it is pretty good but i like because it is cool
** crypt worm and
of course the heirophant
are your best figs but they probably won't work well together so you got to use one or two of them and use your worse guys as support
a few of those would work together, use the Heiro, the shade, the spectre, the fell banshee***, and then throw in a ram figure... this looks like a 300 point army which is fine. try to make it as close to 300 as you can - but the important thing would be to use figs that you think are cool.

I whole heartedly agree with this way of thinking. Not enough people think this way. Im still sort of a Newbie, but i learned this first and foremost. I also think that its important to go with what you love. I love Dragons my GFD is something im gonna use the heck out of as soon as i learn to use him. I will learn from the realms and you should do the same brudda!! Good luck, someday we might meet in battle but it'll be fun haha!!
Ha, I'm a newbie as well but i know the hierophant is pretty good, try to make an army around him, buy or trade the other figs u got to get hold of a good army!
Good luck, have fun and try to enjoy the game as much as possible
I've been out of the scene for a while, so I'm not sure what new strategeries have popped up since sinister.
That being said, I have a few rules for army construction:
1. Standard ratio of figures is 3 for every 100 points played. If you have an expensive unit in the game, balance it out with cheaper. If you have too few bodies, they have less targets to shoot at. A swarm army I define as an army with 5 figs per 100
2. Unless going for a certain theme, a balanced army is a must. You have to have a few "hammers," (high-damage figures) supplemented by less-destructive mop-up forces. Artillery should be included, but the army should also have melee units for the inevitable close-combat (ranged units are more expensive for the same numerical stats).
3. Multi-purpose "firefighters" are not a must, but very useful (most notably, Battle Queen with charge, close combat potential and ranged versatility).
4. Specialists, such as Mancatchers, can be highly effective and useful in neutralizing aspects of your opponent's army, but they have to fit your playing style.
