Don't laugh at my Paladin Priest :) (input appreciated)
Ok, first off... let me say that the Artie army posted by shock inspired this. It's basically my take on it... so here it is.
I want to make a confession. I like the Paladin Priest. I realize that Eldritch Drac is superior in most cases.... but I think I may have found one where the Priest works just as well... if not better. So here it is :
Loners/Bodyguards, Flanking Form 1
*** Heavy Cavalier 47
* Heavy Lancer 35
Loners/general harassment
*** Crystal Protector 17
** Amazon Mancatcher 19
Total = 300
Ok... you can even move the Priest and Cavalry in formation if you want, it'll move 6" with the trolls, which is pretty much what it's gonna do anyways... basically, it just slowly advances into range of the enemy.... the priest healing 2 trolls at once is key, it pretty much lets you push at will... plus the enhancement is very nice, 4 damage trolls.... 2 enhanced F/Lers... the Prot backs up the Priest incase something nasty happens and in the meantime blocks a little LOS for the trolls... the cavalry maintains 6" of the priest, especially, 2 chargers will probably discourage most rammers...well, what do you think, what would give it problems? any input is appreciated :)
Well, I think the Paladin Priest is fine and dandy, but he really isn't worth that many pts. pumped into him. The EGM is a bit glassjawed, but works much better in that formation if you ask me. Sure he can heal two at once, but with all the 14+bound range out there you need those pts. to worry about that. A good take on my army, I must say, but it's not quite worth putting all those pts. in a healer. Aside from that though the army is pretty much like mine and overall I give this a 3/5. Try and practice with this against big archetypes and you'll find the neccessary changes.
You can easily slide the Eldritch Draconum in an army like this, 19 Defend, Healing, 180 arc and does damage!
My 200 point Paladin Priest Army:
Paladin Priest in the middle of
Tough Noble Archer in front
Standard Unicorn Tracker to the left
Light Cavalier to the Right
Standard Standard Bearer Behind
This is my Voltron Rocket Fist army! The whole thing move 12" in 2 actions (Unicorn moves on its own) and can react to many different situations. The multiple healing works well, and the bound / charge abilities are lots of fun as well.
Thank you for the responses, ShockShifter and RobRobBinks.
Shock : I would agree it would be unnecessary if the Priest was JUST acting as a healer. However... what I find to be key for this army is the defend (because trolls have hideous defense scores on their own, as we all know)... but then you'd say, why not play with the Elemental Priest, right, well, it's also the enhancement the Priest provides, that, to me, makes him worth it for this army. It wasn't worth it before they made F/L trolls, but since they did, enhancing them looks pretty good. Also... in 300 pts... with 5 potential attackers, actions will soon be at a premium when engaged... saving 1 action to heal 2 trolls to me is worth 83 pts. Of course I'll try it with EGM and EP as well. I just remember the old school butt kickings I received at the hands of my ex roomate's evil EP/Troll tank armies way back in the days before lancers. Eldritch Drac, if I can get my hands on one, I'll try too.
RobRobBinks: Yes, I remember your Voltron rocket arm army... I liked it quite a bit, it looks like a lot of fun to play... in fact, I had never thought much about the Priest until I saw that army.
Thanks for the input, fellas.... Shockshifter, I'm very interested as to how to your army fares, be sure to post some battle reports for us! :)
yeah, well I did a bit of proxy testing with the priest and he actually isn't half bad. If just through together a bunch of figs and gave them a few extra actions against an army with a proxy priest much like yours. The enhanced F/L did some serious nuking to any swarm, and the general enhanced dmg helped to get figs out of their toughness slots. The +4-5 def. REALLY does pay off and so for the points, this guy isn't too horrible! Overall I think this might fare better against mine since my fig. access isn't that great, but for Christmas I'm getting $75 that I HAVE to spend on MK (at least I hope they let me buy MK, KI charger + $50 more!). People have gotten sick of just sending me money and want to see me actually get something with it for Christmas. The big thing still would be to worry about GA armies and other high dmg ones. That is all that really screws these slow moving trolls. The only real thing that still bugs me about the Priest is his arc, that really restricts his effectiveness.
Unfortunately, I'm too old to get money for Christmas. lol. The Priest's arc can be restrictive, yes.... you have to arrange the figures carefully, and usually this means that you have one troll on point and two others slightly back (it's the same with a priestess)... so in actuality you really need to march them all within 11" of your intended target, if you intend to unleash on them with all the trolls. (Another reason why 2 heals in one action is nice.... because at 11" they're definitely going to get the first shot(s) off at you. Of course, this army doesn't really worry about that much, if at all. Against GA... I've never actually played against a GA army, or a Striker for that matter. Live target practice is hard to come by around here. Don't forget the two chargers... and the crystal protector can help against GA big time by blocking a Striker's or Drac's line of sight. The two chargers, I would imagine, could really help in chasing something big and nasty down, if you do it right.
Hmm... after I did a bit of testing... is it possible to even have all three in your range of the MH and to give them all defend? I tried many ways of arranging the figures and I don't believe its possible. Which leaves you with 2 figures you can heal and the third is on its own unless you rotate and heal. Kinda sucks... but unfotrunately its the truth. Doesn't matter though since the Priestess only really gets to heal one guy before she gets hunted down... her 16 def is all I really used her for... maybe I should get some cryst. prot.... just a thought. Oh yeah and I got the KI charger, a pack of WW, and 2 packs of Minions so far, still looking for the Heroic Quest with Corphy and Autumn though (I got 20 left to spend).
Nice, Nuke. I've been begging WK for a double-arrowed healer for months (see my thread in the 'dreams and desires forum), so I was thrilled when they finally gave us one!
Here's a 300-point ED army that I had:
Eldritch
2x ** Arties
** Troll Gunner
*** War Krugg
*** Horned Krugg
* Phooka
Swapping the PP in there gives you an extra 10 points to fiddle with, but lower D ...
Priest
1x ** Artie
1x *** Artie ( I place this one 'out of arc'; he has 2 slots of toughness so it's not so hard on him if you push.)
** Gunner
** War Krugg
*** Heavy Lancer
*** Crystal Protector
Lots of useful things you can do with the protector. Against a F/L heavy army, she can either sit in front of the middle troll and deny your opp. a formation attack (place the figures on the mat and you'll see what I mean) or she can sit in base with the priest behind the formation and heal if he takes a click or two.
Against ML/Ram formations, I keep the rammer hugging the backside of the formation. Two clicks and he gains toughness, making the whole formation un-rammable.
The Eldritch version of this army is hands-down one of my all-time favorites, and I'm still tinkering with the Priest version.
At any rate, I'm happy to see that not everyone has dismissed the P Priest as trash. I think he's a very useful little fellow, when used properly.
