Formations can only be used if a single opposing figure will be affected by the attack.

say the formation strikes on only one fig, but the sweeper is also based with another fig...

the formation only works for sole target with the formation attack right? but the sweep is still triggered (minus the bonus of formation) also striking the other opposing fig in base contact with the sweeper... is that how it'll go?

If you are using a close combat formation you may not use Sweep at all.

In your example, more than one opposing figure may be affected by the attack. Therefore a formation attack cannot be used.
