In a 200 point game, what do you prefer and why? Small, medium, or large figures?
I see it like this:
Swarms can overwhelm a figure or two, with ease. But, a swarm can be taken down easily with F/L (which can cripple these formations), mounted breakaways, multiple range targets, sweep..., or well placed strike can destroy the formation benifit or slow it to a managable speed. Each figure relies on another to make it powerful.
Fatties are great for MANY reasons. High stats and sometimes, loads of abilites. They can usually handle each other or a few middle grade figures, but find swarms to be a nuisance.
The "somewhere-in-betweens" (30's to to 70's). Best of both worlds. You can get multiple threats and still have support. But, you usually get a lower overall attack value (small figures have formation attack and fatties have higher attack values). But, I think this is the way to go!
Of course terrain and dice rolls are a factor. Dice are random... pick a set and pray. Terrain, you only control half of that...
i have those thoughts too.. everytime i built an army.:)
you're right in saying that these army building styles have their own advantages and disadvantages. at least we know that a balance somehow exists in mage knight. let's just hope they make that more evident in the future.
It all depends on the scenario, but usually I use a centerpiece with a support formation of small units, like Amotep Gunners or Crystal Bladesmen, along with a healer.
beat me too I was gonna say... a great fig with F/L, invulnerable to Ram, Venom and Pole Arm, Great range, fast, 4 damage and pretty much uncapturable.
