In honor of the rules changes, which have done many good things (or will on April Fools!) I am starting this thread on Aquatic figures that will be more powerful now that aquatic is kind of like a second Battle Armor.
So all of you who have an aquatic fig that you think will bring more to the table then before and can change the landscape of the MK battlefield, please post it on this thread and your reasoning as to why. I will start this off.
Unique:
Water Minion-This figure is now that much harder to hit. Sporting an 8 inch range of his own, this "Wraith of the Deep" now has a 20 defense against ranged attacks, as well as dodge. Hitting a figure with 18 defense and dodge is hard enough: now with 20 def and dodge, scoring a solid hit on this guy if he is like an inch inside deep water should be extremely difficult! He also has the recently change magic freeze, which means he can be a formation breaker as well as a ranged sniper like the wraith! (Not that formations would hurt him anyway--he has sweep!)
Hero:
Coral--for 75 points, 2 damage is usually not a good thing. But now, as one of the few figures with both the Aquatic and BA SA's defense against ranged is 21--the game's highest. In shallow water with a unit like an Eldritch Drac on her, her defense against ranged would rise to a whopping 23, meaning that the Striker himself would need an 11 to hit!!
Nonunique:
Shelled one--These buggers only have a 6" move. But they also have a huge 17 def with BA, as well as the aquatic ability. These too can have defeneses raised through defend to a whopping 23 against range!
To me, it looks like the figures with the best defense against range attacks also only do 2 damage, so they are not much of a threat, but the water minion now has much stronger potential, especially with two abilities that are jazzed up!
I also think drowning armies will start to pop up more, with some creative players placing deep water and shallow water nearby, and with the Water Minion (and perhaps the Deep Spawn) being important parts of the puzzle.
The new rules should make things quite interesting. The built-in "battle armor" makes sense because aquatic creatures could be considered to be one w/ their surroundings. Furthur exploits of their watery affinity. I'm also glad they fixed the Shyft. Now I can make a nicer Tormented Soul/Hambulandroika formation.
And now Magic Freeze is actually useful. Now Regal will get the respect he deserves.
onlyh problem with shelled ones and many other aquatic figs is that they are typically slow. I love shelled ones for dungeons but not for rebellion. Even with an aquatic shyft you're still sloooooow.
i never thought i would live to see the day where shelled ones would be remotely useful, but a rules change comes along and proves me wrong. too bad i sold all my crappy nons for $4
Oh yeah, the Water Minion should be a far more useful figure due to the current rules changes. 20 def w/ dodge against ranged attacks and his Magic Freeze will always add a counter.
And here's a little something else. It strays from the aquatic" topic, but it's still worth mentioning:
Magic Confusion has become a lot more useful.
When it says that you give the target a move action, it doesn't say that you can't place the warrior into base contact w/ a warrior friendly to the fire. Just imagine using your Mindsifter to put your opponent's heavy hitter in a daze only to leave its rear arc exposed for a big sneak attack! Or perhaps let it wander into a formation of Deepwood Sentinels? Ouch! And on top of that, if the target of the MC attack has zero action tokens on it, you get to put one on it (Sorry, no free pushing opportunity. They had to draw the line somewhere ;).)
And killing off the overly abusing yo-yo is an extra plus.
The Shelled Ones? Yeah, I think I sold off quite a few of them a few month back, but I'm sure I still have a few lying around.
The boarder stole the Bride of Frankenstein's Hair! The sailors all have that "deer in the headlights" look. And the capitans, they've got gold eyepatches.
Even before the rule changes, I've always liked the WATER MINION. As mentioned above, 18 Defense is already tough to hit on its own. And then it can make a Dodge roll!:D
It's actually my favorite fig, and my opponents are always surprised as to how effective a warrior it can be. Never underestimate Sweep!
I've never used its Magic Freeze, though, and a lot of peope are becoming interested in the Water Minion because of MF. Personally, I like it better as a big drowner than a freezer.
