ok, i was reading the titan rules that came with my DBOC and saw this....
GENERAL RULES:
may not be part of a formation
ATTACKING:
Titans are particularly well suited to attacking and destroying fortifications, When a titan is the attacker(or PRIMARY ATTACKER IN A FORMATION)in a close combat yada yada yada
so are those 2 sections contradicting themselves? which is right?
They are contradicting themselves, but the first one is likely the one that is correct. This is just likely a mistake on the part of wizkids editors, and im pretty sure that part about primary attacker in a formation was NOT included in the IRHG's rules. Thats what I would play it as, but until we get a ruling on this by the Rules Arbitrator, you'll have to go with what your Warlord says. Seeing as Titans were never allowed in formation, his response will likely be the same as mine.
It is correct that Titans cannot be a part of a formation. Demomonkey was asked about this when the Titans rules were released and, while I forget the exact wording of his response, effectively he was hinting that it might be possible in the future (a Shyft-like figure able to allow Titans to make formations?)
It definitely sounded like it was intentional. Yes, you cannot make formations with them (currently). However, if they manage to become part of a formation & are the primary attacker, then they still get the bonus against Castle pieces.
When I came across this apparent contradiction I questioned it on the WizKids site. The response was "there are no figures that Titans can be in formation with...yet."
the keyword there is "YET" ... so better be on the look out :) on things to come :) heheheeh *seems like they could, they might be trying to help out the useless titan figs e.g. living ballistae, mortar and cannon with the obviously low AR for their costing* :)
