Been talking to some peole about placing Terrain and cannot get a consensus! I read in the rules that players each contributes four terrain items to the terrain pool. However, I've been told that only four are chosen in the standard game. It is interesting as I cannot find this in the rules or the recent FAQ!
I live in Ireland and there isn't much play so I wanted to be sure we are playing the same game!!
Thanks (apologies if it is trivial - I kind of think terrain is important), Marburg.
as far as i remeber, before starting the game, you bring four standard terrain templates (per player, so that makes 8,) and after you determine who goes first, you place your armies and terrain one terrain after the other, using only four of the 8.
so, after you two set up your armies, the first player picks a terrain from the 8 and puts it on the field (following legal terrain placements) and then the second player does the same, and then the first player again, then the second player and that's it. four terrain pieces in play. :) then the battle begins.
Hi marburg, from the Unlimited rule book, page 4, paragraph 4, Setting The Scene, "..until 4 terrain items have been placed...". It is implied here that 4 must be placed if there are that may or more in the terrain pool. The Head-to Head, Sealed Booster and Booster Draft rules all say each player must bring 4 pieces of terrain to the tournament.
Now I don't force my players to place terrain and none of the Warlords I've played under do either. But clearly 4 is the limit. What is not clear also, is if one player doesn't place any terrain may the other place all 4.
When I asked this question a year ago I did not get an answer. Just as I never got an answer to the conflicting rules on low walls.
I'm not in a position to check right now, but I seem to remember that you can opt not to place a piece but that the oponent can keep placing until the four are placed. Now I don't know about you, but having the option of placing two or giving all four to the other player is no choice at all :)
I did suggest to WK that standard sizes could include clear terrain.
This would mean that I could place clear terrain in the centre of the table as my first piece, after all four are layed you then simply remove the clear pieces, giving us the option of forcing a clear area.
As necrodog has pointed out, this is laid out in the general tournament rules. Supplying and placing terrain is not optional. Each player MUST bring four pieces of terrain with them, and MUST place two pieces of terrain from the pool.
Thanks guys - this is really helpful - I appreciate the replies. I'm hoping to organize some regular MK games (first regular MK games) in a local store in Ireland and I'm hoping to get it right - hence my question.
I'm not a warlord or anything, and rely entirely on MKRealms.com for information on rulings, etc. I guess the main point of the exercise is to have fun playing and get more people interested in MK. I've just built a hard playmat made from 9 1'x1' tiles and some elevated terrain, hedges, hindering terrain with little trees, etc. I know that you can't have elevated terrain in the standard game but it looks good for fun games and makes the game more attractive (especially as there is a GW Warhammer store locally with cool dioramas).
