with the introduction of Skyros and the prevelance of big bound, I think we should remember a little ole fig from lancers.
the deepwood sentinal
this ki unit has stealth, and polearm. a formation of these can act as a blocking wall from in/behind hindering, and there polearm stops the big chargers (Skyros/ki swarm etc.) Oh yeah, and it can be forcemarched 12 with a standard berrer (or ashel the driven, he has polearm too!)
downsides, low dammage and attack, and a rather short life, however the * ones have 2 clicks of polearm.
While a viable fig for those reasons, you need to have them behind terrain to get the stealth to work, ortherwise they are just targets. They just do not offer enough strength, in any area, to be played in a serious army. They will most likely end up becoming an extra fig in a formation attack, and there are plenty of other, better figures that fill this position.
Not a bad idea, but the fig just dosent preform well.
I think the figure in Uprising called the Quarterstaff Warrior is a better consideration for pole arm than the Sentinel. The stats for the weak one are up in the units section, and they are impressive IMO. 10 attack, 3 damage, pole arm, 270 degree arc looks good to me. All for 24 points. While it doesn't have stealth, it's at least worth a look.
If you're talking about specifically Skyros, I don't think the Sentinel is a good counter to that. Unless you're going to use 4 of them to make it impossible for Skyros to base a figure, they won't protect that figure from charge. Even if Skyros does target the deepwoods, his toughness negates pole arm. While he can't get first strike on them, even the tough only has 8 attack, so it needs a 9 to hit...and even then doing only one damage.
the quarterstaff warrior is not out yet (and why it should have polearm is beyond me) and does not have stealth. an amazon would rip them apart. The deepwood sentinal offers something that *can* be used to block LOS to an amazon with use of hindering, and it isn't an option for skyros to charge them if you have a *** heavy lancer sitting 4 inches behind them. And remember, polearm is also a pain for harrassers. what makes them viable is that they are not a valid target for many attacks, weather your opponent is using range, or charge. they work for denying your opponent a target in multipul situations.
remember, if a fig basing a polearm fig fails its breakaway, and spins, it still activates the polearm.

Yeah, we should all just quit MK now.
SOme dude comes along and starts a thread about an underused figure and everyone is like "amazon this, skyros that, my mom loves sheep" yadda yadda yadda.
Personally I hope we never get prize support again and people just start playing games to try out new strategies.

I remember how "versatile versus specialist" army gripes started that way... ;)

OST 25:17 - "The path of the Tech Support is beset on all sides by the inequities of the moronic, and the tyranny of stupid men. Blessed is He who, in the name of low wages and good will, shepherds the idiots through the Valley of the Blue Screens of Death. For truly He is his brother's keeper and the finder of lost files. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who demand to see my supervisor. And you will know I am the Tech when I lay my Opening Script upon thee."
well the simple fact is the amazon draconum and skyros exist. Every figure must be compared to those figures now to be competitive.
If it doesn't equal the A-game brought to the table by those "power figures" then it gets pushed to the wayside, you must remember this is a game and no one likes to lose a game. People play games to win, winning makes any person feel better and no matter what people say I haven't met a person yet that is chipper about losing.
I mean you can walk into a war with a bunch of B-grade troopers and when they meet your enemies A-list elites you shouldn't be too shocked when they get their collective butts handed to them quite easily. It's part of life, the best stay the best and the weak get put into boxes to never see life.
Mage Knight and real life have the same rules.
I was totally content, mayhaps even "chipper" about losing (2nd place) in the National Qualifiers. I played an army I never tried before, used figures that are rarely, if ever, used in tournaments anymore, and I walked away feeling better than everyone else.
Because AD vs Corphy was our finals. Makes me laugh.
I wonder though, if everyone get's sick of the AD BS, if they'll quit. Then what will all the "winning is winning no matter what" people do?
