If you look around a little, in this forum, you will see my first attempt at designing an army. I want to put harassers in the army to fill out the point value but I'm unsure as to what figures to use.
So I wanted to ask the other Realmers what criteria do you use to select which figures you place in your army. Right now I have a Pyre Spirit, Tomb Horror and Elven Demi-Magus as harassers. There are probably better selections but I don't know what or how to figure what would be better. When I go to try and select figures I hit a mental block or something, I think of what would work and I draw a blank, unable to think of anything good. Your help would be greatly appreciated, and THANKS in advance.
I usually use small expendable units for blocking and harassing. Some of the best have quickness as well, so you can still further your armies strategy without spending actions on harassing.
In the bigger games, your harassers may end up as major threats. In that case, you are looking for figures that have a good chance of surviving deep in enemy territory and getting back to tell the tale. Easy breakaway, high speed, toughness and battle fury are all in high demand here..the Tough Fell Reaper is one of the best. The Neophant would have been cool, but he doesnt get Battle Fury until his second click.
the type and amount of harassers I use. For example, if I'm playing a lot of static range I want easy break aways, so I usually go with something with flight like an imp. I want easy break aways so the harasser can break away and my range units can shoot. If you are playing more melee you want something to block line of sight and something that can withstand an attack from your opponent's figure giving you time to move into base. Shades work well for this with 12" move, quickness and enough clicks of life to survive most figures' single attacks. Stalking Skeletons are also good 10" move, quickness and the ever annoying dodge. Plus, if you add a Grave Robber you can keep bringing back your harassers. If I'm playing a bound army, I usually use line of sight blockers more than harassers. So I use LI figures, Crystal Protectors, Marrow and Black Dirge--these are dual purpose figures, they block line of sight and also perform another role such as healer, charger, harasser. These are all "light" or "medium" harassers. You also have "heavy" harassers that are more expensive but perform different roles. As RobRob pointed out, the Fell Reaper is one of the best heavy harassers in the game. 14" flight, toughness, battle fury and shake-off damage make it perfect for dealing with other mounted figures. I also use a Fell if I'm expecting to face a Pyre Spirit. The Wyvern is also a good heavy harasser--12" flight & venom. Wyvern can fight and venom is nice for taking on Shield Golems, EGM tanks, etc. (Of course a good player will try to prevent the venom figure from basing the SG/EGM).
I try not to see harassers as "fillers". That's the first step when picking harassers, be it a small or heavy one.
If I want a harasser which can help me offensively, I usually pick figures like Marrow, Stalking Skeletons, Skeletons, Black Dirge, Fell Reapers, the Wyvern, Throttle Worms and even Mancatchers. It depends on the army I'm playing with and the points I have available.
If I don't want a harasser able to actually fight, but to play more tactical roles instead, I pick figures like Crystal Protectors, Shades and weak mancatchers. I used to play Imps and Gobbos also, but these are much easier to kill, and with so many bounders around they just don't work as they used to.
