I've pretty new to MK:D so I've been ready the rules and checking out all my figs. I've also only played the game a few times with a bunch of buddies (w/ house rules).
What I can't seem to understand is why you would want to use shockwave. The way I see it is that your hero needs to isolate him/herself in a room of multiple (to make it useful) MS. But after you attack is over, your hero is all by their lonesome to take a beating by all the MS that survived the few clicks of damage that you might have doled out.
Anyone have a good strategy to use with Shockwave?
Sigmazero13 used it on me once in a very effective manner. I had a Mage Spawn down to 1 click of life left. All I had to do was hit it one more time to gain 40 or so experience points. He had none of his figures near me to be able to finish off the Spawn by himself, but there was a Sun Leopard on the board near the Spawn that I was going to kill. The Sun Leopard could not get close enought to my figures to Shock wave me, but he could get close enough to just use Shockwave and hit the other Spawn. Since there are no targets with Shockwave, it was a perfectly legal move that took my 40 experience points. Best use of Shockwave that I have seen yet!
Remember that shockwave is affected by terrain ( just not figure bases ), so it's pretty easy to maneuver your heroes behind pillars and such, do your shockwave attack, then come out of hiding and smack the weakened MS. Doors, too, make for great use of shockwave! Move your SW hero into a room, close the door, then shockwave! If successful, you'll hit what's in the room AND you'll destroy the door so your other heroes can charge in. BONUS: If you can find a chest with some kind of invisibility item, your shockwave hero can explode with impunity and not have to worry about any ranged counterattacks! Hope that helps!:D
Oh, that accursed edit time limit!
One other thing - this is tricky to pull off, but VERY satisfying if it works: Try a magically enhanced shockwave attack in a room full of weak (or weakened) MS. Your support figure will take 2 clicks, as will everything else, but if done right you'll gain enough experience to level up and get your damage healed right back! Good, no?:D
Sorry, you can't enhance shockwave. Shockwave ignores ALL abilities except aquatic.
There is a way to do it in rebellian, I'm not sure if it works in dugeons. If the shockwaver has LOS from dot to dot with the enhancer then no enhancement, but if blocking terrain was between the dots, but still allowed base contact then the shockwave would be enhanced.
I don't think that the LOS rules for dungeons would allow that to work, but I'm not sure.
heres THE FIVE STEPS TO USING SHOCKWAVE:
1. buy an expensive mounted theronody(like me).
2. pay its large cost and put it in your army(like me).
3. use its charge to double time into your opponents formation(this works well against turtling).
4. use a close combat attack(s) to heal it a little.
5. shockwave them all and watch them drop from four clicks of damage when they swarm you.
an expensive way to use shockwave but as you can tell by many of the other posts here[ahem]. about the only truly effective way.
I saw my dad once use shockwave to weaken some MS a click and then did a little move/sweep and destroyed about 3 of them.
In my opinion, shockwave is an underdog ability in dungeons, with the small hallways and usually only a couple MS near you at a time, its hard to dish out the damage, it is a very useful ability against tormented souls tho :D and takin out toushness/invuln and even LI.
sparrowhawk: SW only deals 1 damage to multiple targets, i dont think thats very fair tho, especially for SW powerhouses like Therenody.:(
OOOPS, sorry i forgot that that is just my houserule... HEHEHE! i have tons of house rules, i think they make the game a lot more sensible. like that you can use monteds in the dungeon but they lose any nimble, bound, and charge effects cause halls are narrow. cause hey how can you fly in a dungeon but not have mounts? and my rule that fliers cant move over blocking terrain and and halve their movement in dungeons. i almost made the house shockwave rule cause it isnt fair to pay like 70pts for an ineffective shockwave. i mean they already halved the range and made the damage 1, why dont they just eliminate the ability altogether its so usless normally?????????????????????????????
I have gotten Shockwave to work pretty well in Dungeons, especialy if there are many trap tiles and/or doors. I once was able to SW two of my opponent's heros, and a trap tile with the little dwarf one. The thing is that the two heroes where right next to the trap, and when the trap went off it was the sweeping jaws of doom one who crit hit them both. Hitash had a fine time cleaning up the mess of heroes afterwards:D.
Shockwave is an underated ability, but if you try to set up the dungeon so that it is pretty spatiouse, and has lots of iron doors, you can both enhance the effectivness of your shockwaver, and protect your own figs from the blast.
