What non-uniques should I be looking for to get started in Mage Knight?
Greetings all!
Thanks for all your help in picking out the uniques and LEs I should trade for to start my Mage Knight collection. Below is the list of NON-uniques I was planning on trading for. I decided to focus on three factions, with some Mage Spawn and Shfyt thrown in. Remember that I am just getting started, and basically want to pick up the flavor of the game and practice before 2.0. If I can squeeze out any tourney worthy army in the meantime, that wouldn't suck! ;-)
What I wanted from you was to know:
a) If I am looking to get any figs that are really useless (in 1.0 OR 2.0), or if I am getting the wrong experience level
b) If I am getting to many of any particular fig
c) If there are any other really good figs in the faction that I am NOT getting
I would love to here your advice everyone. Thanks for your time and assistance....
Find out what you like, collect those types of figures. Don't listen to anyone who tells you that you need a certain figure or certain figures. Play how you want to.
That's my plan for 2.0. However, I have a chance to pick up some 1.0 figs relatively cheaply during this time of flux. I hope to practice the 2.0 game with the 1.0 figs. Now, I just don't know what to trade for to do that.
I play Mechwarrior right now, and duplicates of good figs is key. Is the same true of Mage Knight, or would I be better to get 120 different molds that try and doulbe up on anything?
It's THOSE type of questions that I am hoping to get answered early, because NOW is when I have the oppurtunity to get figs cheap and I doubt I will pick up any more before November! ;-)

Yes, you'd really want some doubles... but it all actually depends on what army you're fielding or making at the moment.
sometimes you're playing single figs for your current tactics and strategy, sometimes the benefit of having redundancy in figures damage and formations working for you is beneficial.
 What's wrong with you? Where is Atlantis, Draconum, and Solonovi - just one?
Just teasing - those are my three favorites. I think the were creatures have the potential to rock in 2.0 - a single shyft on the board and then mage spawn can move in formation - werebears double move to put them into a sweet spot - then move and attack!
I like having multiples of Atlantis golems and warrior sprites. A row of cheap Limited Invisiblity flyers has saved my deriere (sic) more than once! Good hunting!
that will depend if your a competitive player or someone who plays the game for fun. If it's the latter choose what you want to play with. Necromancing things is always fun like the Zombie baron, skelectons etc. For competitive play, many things are required. Light cavaliers are cheep and effective, Fell reapers are a god sent. Ganging up on any big figure with three of these can be deadly. Tormented Souls have become useful with the summoning ability as is anyone with limited invisibility.
Going over your list I couldn't really find anything too horrible in the list not to have. You have a pretty good selection, and if those where your picks, you have good taste. THe only things I would take off the list are:
-KI-
Squire - Shades are better at tieing things upthen these guys, but if you like to be pure faction...
-NS-
Nightstalkers - If those are yellow Nightstalkers I wouldn't get them. I am not too clear how you have the ranks set up (I assume it is ***/**/*). If those are reds though I would highly recomend them.
-Orc-
Your orc selection is fine, although I wouldn't get the Shaman unless you have a Chaos Mage or Summoner (I missed your unique post).
-Shyft-
I would realy try to get Bond Makers over any of the other Shyft, although Swooping Invaders make for a decent unit to tie things up with (12 flight and 18 Def with MR is pretty decent).
-MS-
Acid Ooze - I would never use these outside of the Dungeon.
Animated Mud - See Acid Ooze.
Armored Skeleton - There more viable, but have low AV.
Chimeric Work - OK figure.
Crypt Worm - Awesome with Surge and Double-time rules.
Deadwood Golem - See Acid Ooze.
Horned Hatchetkrugg - Good figure IMHO.
Horned Impaler - Decent if you can get a Bond Maker to boost their speed.
Hydra Serpent - OK sweeper.
Ironblood Ettin - See Acid Ooze.
Ki Devil - Very nice.
Manticore - I use them.
Minotaur - See Acid Ooze.
Minotaur Mage - Fairly decent with Phookas.
Shade - GET THESE!
Skeleton - GET THESE!
Specter - Almost as good as Shades.
Squalid Gremlin - See Acid Ooze.
Stinging Skeleton - Good for a cheap necroable venomer.
Throttle Worms - GET THESE
Tormented Soul - Pretty good.
War Hatchetkrugg - Even better then the Horned variety.
War Impaler - Good figure if you want some ranged and ram.
Werebear - GET THESE! They are UBBER with Surge (13 AV with 4 Dam if you set them up right).
Weresabertooth - See Acid Ooze.
Of course this is all based on what I have played and used. You will probably have different prefrences then me, but I hope my opinion helps in the long run.
Anyways, my thoughts on your list: (I will run all tough to weak)
Faith Healer - 2/0/0 -- Decent healers, but not the best, worth while if you don't have acsess to alot else.
Infantry Captain - 1/1/1 -- If you can, these guys are really good combative forced marchers.
Liege Knight - 1/0/2 -- Unless you have a unique with really good defend, and just plan on doing everything in defend-chains.. you'll want a tough, higher defense.
Light Cavalier - 2+/2+/0 -- What can I say, I love these things!
Light Lancer - 1/2/0 -- They're pretty good, I prefer cavaliers though.
Rivvenguard - 0/0/5 -- Interesting setup here. These are useful though. I love their magic retaliations.
Squire - 0/3/0 -- I've never had a use for these guys, but, when I want harassment I tend to use standard bearers, 'cause they're faster :)
Standard Bearer - 2+/2+/4+ -- All good KI armies need these things, espeicialy the weak, 11 points for your formation moving 12 inches.
Temple Blademaster - 1/2/2 -- These guys have their uses.. :)
*adds*
Heavy Cavaliers - 2+/2+/? -- Can't go wrong, they're abit slower and more expensive than the light, but they're also bloody sturdy. :)
Heavy Lancers - 2+/2+/0 Whoo, these guys can be wcked when played right! 'specially if you have defeders.
Shield Golem - Atleast one of each strength for maximum army flexability -- 20 defense and defend. 'nuff said.
Elf At Arms - 2+/2+/2+ -- The classic bread and butter infantry unit of the KI, beg steal or borro to get some, 10 attack and 3 damage for pretty cheap.
Tribows - 2+/2+/0 -- High attack, good damage and pierce.. put that with an effective 16" range (12" + 4" bound)
Warbards to taste, they're KI enhancers. :)
*** Necropolis ***
Dunno 'bout the sect.
*** Orcs *** Looks good, I hope you're tough to weak. :p
Ankhar Butcher - 3/1/1
Barber-Surgeon - 1/1/1
Clurch Piper - 1/1/0
Crusher - 3/3/0
Goblin Volunteer - 0/4/0
Ironclad - 3/1/1
Shaman - 1/2/0
Tribal Brute - As many as your army needs of strength to taste. Excelent staying power.
Cave Butchers - As many as you can get yer paws on -- They're like faster, lighter armord ankar butchers :)
I dunno if anyone told you to, but get Shaman Og
*** Shyft ***
Get bondmakers, and then look in to other stuff :p
*** Mage Spawn *** (I agree with Vapor on all but these)
Manticore - 0/0/1 -- Virtual powerhouses on the battlefield, one of my players uses them all they time, and kicks butt with 'em.. Get more :p
Minotaur - 0/0/1 -- These guys are actually good on the field if played right, if you like 'em, experiment :p
Tormented Soul - 1/0/0 -- These guys are an iffy piece.. I have never really fielded one or seen one fielded. One good unit will kill it in no time,
*** Solonavi ***
Channeler - 0/0/1 -- I like tough channlers, m'self :)
From the factions you have chosen you have about everything you need to start playing in tourney's you might not win them but playing good people is how you get good right?
Having duplicates are very handy the only thing your really missing is Fell Reapers from necroplis getting a couple of then would be very handy.
