Played a sealed 2.0 tournament tonight - some thoughts
1) Distribution throughout the starters and boosters seems very good. There were 5 players, and I think everyone got at least one flight figure, and a good mix of ranged and melee as well.
2) Matches are indeed a lot faster than before. On average, in a 50 minute round we'd all be done 10 minutes or more before time ran out, with 300 point armies.
3) Kieren Starsdawn is a great figure to include in all starters. He's not too powerful, but strong enough that everyone was guaranteed at least one solid offensive fighter.
4) Bombardment is balanced well. The Bombardment figures I saw needed an average of 10 to hit, and that was with clear LOS. Move something to block LOS before the roll is made and they needed 11s and 12s. It rarely landed, let alone hit. WizKids, hear my plea!!! I pulled a Mortar Altem and I think he hit on target twice during the entire tournament. Keep this SA like it is! Don't make Bombardment figures who need a 6 or 7 to hit, and have 3 tokens and 3 Damage! Thank you.
5) Revenant is insanely powerful. As far as I have seen, there are 2 figures that have it - Deathspeaker Aerodon and a non-unique that costs less than 30 points. A NON-UNIQUE THAT COSTS LESS THAN 30 POINTS. I pulled her. And I used to to great effect. She brought Varatrix back from the dead and used him against he old army on one turn. She brought a Harka Orc back and he surged something for 6 clicks of damage. She brought back Kieran and he Bounded a golem for 3 damage. I expect to see this ability toned down in a future FAQ or errata. It basically gives you a free attack, with no dire consequences - critical miss? Who cares, the figure isn't even yours anymore and he's going to evaporate into dust at the end of the turn, it was worth a shot.
6) Little guys are worthy! I had two 17 point Empire Veterans who could surge 8" to attack for 2 Crushing Blow damage. They formed up with a Combat Magus and surged at anything that got close.
7) What's the red square on Damage? It's not on the 2.0 SAC.
8) Had a blast, the objectives add a lot to the game, surge adds a huge amount, Mage Knight has entered a renaissance... although I am still somewhat peeved that the old factions got put out to pasture.
Yeah, I just finished a few games and the tough Dark Crusader is uber. Very uber. I also had the fortune to pull the tough Steam Mauler. While it is 81 points, it doesn't miss often with a 10 attack and arcing fire. 2 damage pierce on each pog. Yes, the weak and to some degree the standard mortar will only hit about 25% of the time but the tough usually never misses unless the target also has an 18 or hgher defense. I also like the mechanics of the new Horseshoe Figs! they come in handy to double time acroos the board quick and maintain objectives. And I really like the toned down version of artillery. Not as 'broken' as I first expected but great for forcing turtlers into the battle!
While I do think the Dark Crusader will be the chase non of the set I don't think its too powerful. People will just have to learn to combat it first at any cost. After my first game of oppossing one, I made sure to always take her out first and she became less of a threat.
All in all the games were shorter, more combat oriented, while still maintaining a strategic edge.
good job wizkids!
Thanks Draddog for all the updates and clarifications on rule loops! You did an awesome job to get me back into this wonderful game I once abandoned!
Not A WHOLE DAY. Sorry about the intense amount of sarcasm, but I think maybe we should wait through a little constructed tournament play before we demand a change like this. I personally would like to see the formation rule changed like this, but I am also willing to try it for a while before I expect any kind of change. Do you remember how long it took for them to change ML? Seeing as you signed up on these boards around the same time I did, I bet you do. I am eager to see atlantean veterans fight with their old chums from rebellion and unlimited, I will wait patiently for the change (for a while at least) It is important to air these concerns, but asking for a change after one day of release does seem a little hasty to me.
From what I've seen and played, I can say that I am slightly worried about Varatrix, and because of my MechWarrior experience, I am kind of worried about the Tough Mortar Altem.
But nothing I've seen thus far leads me to believe that this set contains anything that's going to ruin the game...
on to the sealed tourney -
last night the winner was a complete newbie. his first MK purchase ever - He took Khan Rava with Morrowdrinker
bound, bound (puch to shoot) take a click of damage 0 deal 4 damage - heal, Khan rava never fell Oh, He got the *** dark crusader as well.
Revenant was the most poweful game changing event that happened.
Originally posted by barrel I have to assume your talking about a green circle in damage after lookin gup the figure. HE has tinker
It's probably just a misprint, I checked the units section too. The ***Combat Magus has Tinker. The one I pulled is a ** and for 3 slots he has a Green Square on damage. The 2.0 SAC doesn't have a Green Square and it signified the starting slot under 1.0, of course the figure has it for 3 clicks. So it probably does nothing and is just a misprint. But I thought I would ask, since Draddog said it had been errated in the FAQ, but I can't access the FAQ here at work. I'll have to wait until I get home.
